would it make a difference to the fuel consumption if the fuel return was piped into the back of the pump and not back to the tank ..?

in theory no the engine will use whatever fuel it needs

have you had it set up on a rolling road? that will make a real difference

Just means you plumb the return fuel line downstream of the tank. So long as its on the tank side of the pump youll be fine.

In boost we trust

if the fuel return is too small you may get the "backpressure" causing the regulated pressure to raise, in turn flooding the carb float bowl and causing rich running.

no i havent had rolling road as yet FUNDS :( and the want 90 quid to set it up .. also im returning 10mpg if i am very lucky and only just touch the throttle ...

check the float valve,

check the fuel pressure.

get it on the rollers
