Pulled the intake bend of the GT17 I got from a scrapper the other day and was confronted with this. The pics say it all but I'm not thinking this is going to be that servicable looking at the compressor. There is no play in the turbine shaft. What do you guys think?

That's fine - I've run a lot worse. Sure, it isn't going to win you 1st place at Avon, but it'll work just finem and is a lot better than an LCB with no turbo. On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:

I have seen so many GT17 with compressor damage and I can't understand what is happening. Can anybody explain it. I guess it only needs a small bit of debris in the intake so I can only assume there is a part of a Saab that comes loose quite often. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

They go into surge even in the standard application, noticed it in my bosses Saab, also breather system dumps water and crud in pre-turbo, couple that with hammering onto a motorway sliproad from cold and you have damage :) just a theory anyways, see it alot on modern turbo motors cause the turbo's are always small and worked very hard. turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

how exactly do you detect surge?

um it sone of those things you need to be in a car and feel, but it sounds like "shoom shoom shoom shoom" as you hear air rush into the turbo and then stall then rush in etc and naturally if you watch the manifold pressure it goes nuts. Really bad for the turbo. turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Took the comp housing off at the weekend while I was having a break from welding and checked the turbo out a little bit more.

To remove the housing, all you need to do is undo about 8 bolts (i think) that go round the circumfance of the housing. A 2 minute job. by loosening them you can also rotate the compressor outlet to a better angle
