I've read all the threads I could find on the subject and it seems opinions divided on fitting a tensioner to a duplex chain.

For the people that have fitted them what have you used?

Did you use a single row tensioner (either positioned in the center or left standard) or

Made your own using another manufacturers tensioner (e.g. Ford Crossflow) or

Used OEM for a duplex on an a-series (although I don't think they exsist)

thanks in advance,
mark

We've just built our van's engine with the help of Benross. We fitted the standard A+ tensiornor in the standard place to a standard cast duplex setup. Our chain was well stretched though.

However Steve's opinion was that if we had a new "good quality" unused chain that we should leave the tensioner out.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I fitted it in its standard place on a setup with standard duplex (cast) sprockets, it's wide enough to cover the whole width of a duplex chain (just).

I used it because even with a brand new chain, sprockets about 5k miles in a previous life, there was still a small amount of slack.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

As said, i've always used the standard A+ jobbie, removes the slack and keeps it quiteter when it does start to wear.

Thanks Chaps.... I have fitted a Kent Vernier with chain so may buy a new single tensioner and see what it's like.

I'll also try to get hold of a used Ford Tension off a pre-xflow or xflow as they use a duplex chain I understand and see if one can be adapted to fit will report back.
