how long do you reckon a set of new std 998 pistons would last in a turbo engine? this is assuming being driven fairly hard on a regular(ish) basis plus track days?
also assuming undercrown cooling, would a couple of years use be out of the question?
cheers

Not too sure I want to stake any of my reputation (if any) on this one.

I had a set of the latest slipper pistons with a 7cc dish in them (these are now almost impossible to get so I assuume you don't have these) anyway at 18-20 psi the ringlands fell apart, so I don't suggest you use them.

I now use the standard 7cc dished long sleeve pioston, with cir-clip gudgon pin.

I have had these in for 3 seasons and they still seem fine (i.e. good compression no more than normal cramk-case compression).

However, 3 seasons probably only amounts to about 500 miles of use (all flat-out mind)

By all accounts it's revs that kill these pistons; so keep it below 6500 and put some nylon buttons in to protect the bores if the cir-clips break (I plan to do this but havent got round to it yet.

Hope this is whishy washy enough for you.

Wil

the problems of breaking new ground I guess!

theres even less info on 998 turbos than there is on 1275s!!!

according to an article i read the 1098 has about 50% more torque than a 998 as standard even with a turbo friendly 8.3:1 cr (might be 8.5:1 i cant recall)
i used to have a 1098 but it went bang (156,000 miles) and was replaced with a 998 and the difference was big.
going from just wafting around at fairly low rpm at silly speeds i was ragging the crap out the 998 to get anything out of it.
bottom line is i loved that 1098 and i would like to see what sort of power i can extract from one, i'm aiming more for high torque than all out power (this will be a road car) and i think the long stroke of the 1098 will go some way to achieving a good torquey motor which will pull from anywhere in the rev range whether its on the boost or not.
if it turns out there is no significant difference then i'm not too bothered, i just want to give it a go.
it might seem like a pointless reason but i miss my old 1098 :(
oh yeah ....
and its a bit different ! lol

1098 is a smart motor - tons more fun than a 998!

Takes me back to my first mini... And the second.
Then I discovered that a 1275 pulled straight from a metro, pushed onto its side and a 286 cam swap later, Gave lots of power and plenty of fun/?

Still, Interesting project...

The bit different thing I can understand...

but if you want torque a 1275 and a good head gets you to about 150 lbft on 8psi!!!

The 1098 pistons are weak iirc and so you'd be better of with a 1275 in std form!

I had a whole series of Morris Minors with 1098's. I failed to ever bust a crank and they used to rev like motorbikes. I wouldn't want to boost one though, or cam it overly.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.
