I started pulling the front off my the car today, the intention being to flip front it, bash a fiat head on it ditch the petrol tank and convert it to LPG,

Now i've been looking into LPG a bit n but theres not much in thee way of info on how it can be done...
What i was anticipating was, get hold of a fuel cell (so its got the filler that will mate to the pumps in petrol stations) regulate the output of this down to a few bar (as per a normal FI system) and stick it into some normal petrol injectors and control it with MS, bu it looks like i may need to get special LPG injectors, does anyone know if the gas can just be stuffed into an conventional fuel rail?

He did plan to use an 8V cinquicento head but since Robert didn't need to make any piston cut-outs for the 16V head so he might have changed plans

weeeeeellll

Im still thinking 8v as they are non interfereance (mostly) as this will be NA, so i cant move the LCA to mis the pistons without killing power.

Joe, I'll see if I can get hold of my mate who used to do LPG installs for a living and see if I can get some information for you.

Are you planning LPG only then? Most conversions use petrol to start the engine and warm it up and then switch over to gas once upto a certain temperature as far as I'm aware.

Cool,

yep looking at LPG only, I have an LPG garage right near me, so it make sense really.

I've read stuff saying LPG is dificult to start on from cold, but also read that its fine...

also roberts lump didnt seem to have a problem staring from cold.

LOL,

lpg's higher octane so more boost can be run, but i'm only doing it for cheapness.

if your trying to inject liquid propane will the injectors not freeze up?

on the milti-point lpg systems i have worked on, there is a coolant-heated evaporator feeding gaseous lpg to a distribution block, this then has pipes running off it to each lpg injector then into a tapping on the inlet manifold close to the head.

Well to start with I was thinking of injecting liquid as it would be more akin to a petrol system, but looking into it a bit more I'm thinking of a heated evaporator system as you say,

basically cheapest/easiest within reason.

Ha ha, I like the fact that whole post is written like its a common occurence on minis to fling a fiat head on, then run it on gas!

Looks an interesting project.

I know very little about LPG stuff, aside from using my Dads old Range Rover on gas a few times. From what I could tell it used a crude restrictor ring which then pulled the gas in akin to a venturi effect thingymajig. Very very crude indeed.

thats the first generation of lpg systems, wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. the later kind are sequential injection and basically piggyback of the petrol ecu and when switching to gas, shut off the petrol injectors and open the gas ones. teh standard ecu then controlls the lpg with the lpg ecu trimming the fuel as required/if required.with the right injectors should be easy enough to just run them striaght off a standalone ecu like megasquirt.
expensive bit would be sourcing a good evaporator, tank and injectors.

my only experience is on rangies too, my god those things drink fuel.

I've seen the toroid tanks and injectors around for not mega money, I still have to look at evaporators.

Just plan a turbo in from the start, you know it will happen anyway and it will save you having to rework things

I'd completly forgotton i'd put this up!

ok, with the death of the 7 port I need to get this mot'd so i have a car, and also to free to room up to get the 7 port in to pull the lump,

the rot was worse than i thought once i started poking things (isnt it always!) so far i have fitted new A panels new flitch, new scuttle, flip front and new pass side inner and outer sills and floor pan.

next weekend should see the the sills and floor pan on the other side done and the doors back on.

then i have the roof and flip front to paint, dash to refit, front lights to fit and cooling system to install (cinq rad)
