De freging my laptop

I have a dell with vista on i've been doing a de freg now for the past few days leaving it a few hours to finish, i never does, will it ever finish of is vista different as normally you can see your progress but i can't seem to with vista.

any thoughts very welcome.

Does anyone defrag anymore? Is your hard drive nearly full?

if its fragged that bad i'd wipe it and start again personally.

havent defragged a machine in yrs now.

Well sprocket if people don't they dame well should, as it really helps speed things up.

well its 2:1 for not defragging, but I supose I don't have as much media to store as you would, so you could well be right

Defragging only really needs to be done on hard drives that are nearly full where you write and erase lots of data all the time.

on my work machine i use a program called smart defrag and ccleaner seem to keep it inorder

just like me then with my photos, we are takeing a fe gig each job, then after a few weeks i delete them from the laptop Just seems to help speed it up, just not sure if some things wrong as it taken so long lol.

Matt, It's a piece of cake to setup your laptop so that it will defrag itself to your schedule. e.g. at startup or on Sunday mornings etc etc. Let me know if you want me to explain how.

We do it on all the branch servers, helps keep things ship shapped. Well as ship shaped as a server could be...

@Miniwilliams what software are you using to defrag?

I used to use O&O defrag which had a task that ran all the time - it was also a resource hog so I ditched it.

I now use UltraDefrag:

Version 3.2, I'm still using 3.0 see there's lots of new stuff in 3.2.

I always defrag once a month, regardless of useage.

I have had defrags take a several hours so I usually leave it running over night and turn off automatically.

Lot, I just use the vista de freg programme o my laptop. cheers for the link.

i might try leaving it over night then, just in a different room other wise the fan will keep me awake all night lol

also try doing in it in safemode as it reduces the risk of failures

vista wont let you do it if it doesn't think it needs to, thats what i found!
