why isnt anything ever straight forward?!

Got a new alternator today and new fan belt. Belt from Minispares, GCB10825.

Something that I thought would be quite simple has 3 problems.

1.
This should be simple, clearly the belt isnt running straight to the alternator, I do have a spacer for the alternator to push the pulley out I just need to get the pulley nut off, any ideas how to without an impact gun?

2.
The adjustable bracket is causing me all sorts of problems.

Fitted in the normal position the adjustment bolt isnt long enough to get the nut on to fix the position. As you can see it sits flush with the surface of the bracket.

Fitting the bracket on the other side of the alternator gives me the problem where it now fouls one of the bolts for the MJ Bracket, clearly this shouldnt be an issue as the bracket should be on the normal side of the alternator.

3.
Finally, another belt issue, the belt is fouling the MJ Bracket as you can see. Is this the fault of the bracket and I just need to space it out a bit? I looked at adding some washers but the std bolts that hold the bracket arnt long enough to reach the block with washers in.

I'm sure these are school boy errors but im not ashamed to ask and at least it means someone else wont need to ask in the future!

first off,

can you turn the aduster bracket around so the slot is on the alternator?

second can you just put a washer between the alternator and waterpump to sort the alignment?

put washers between the alternators bottom bolt and space the adjusting bracket away from the alternator to wards the engine plate,

for the nut you could try hitting a spanner with a hammer to shock it off?

and for carls 36-1 bracket not a clue as to why it catches but is the sensor held over the teeth correctly?

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Is that adjustment bolt the proper double ended pillar bolt? Can't make it out from the picture.

Is that the correct alternator? Looks odd to me. Doesn't seem to be sitting straight.

The bottom hole is usually threaded.

I got some washers with my crank trigger bracket, so it can be spaced away slightly.

Problem 1 solved, managed to crack off the pulley bolt and put in the spacer off the old alternator so the belt is straight and true.

Brett, the image where the adjustment bolt isnt long enough, the bracket is on the right of the alternator as you look at it so washers would space it the wrong way.

Mini13, I could turn the bracket round, I guess I'm intregued as to why it doesnt fit the right way round and would prefer that if I can fix it.

The sensor bracket fouling the belt, I guess it could do with being nudged over a touch as it isnt perfectly central to the teeth. But thats where the problem of spacing it out the bolts dont reach the block.

graemec, the bolt is the only one I have but it doesnt mean its the right one. Has the bit shaved of under the head...

This is the correct bolt:http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=34981&title=ALTERNATOR BRKT PILLAR(2A...
Anything else and you are guessting at the correct length, how many nuts and washers to fit to get the spacing correct etc...

If the alt is a new one from MiniSpares then it should be the right one and fit with out any shims under the pulley etc. I must admit my belt looks less and less straight the more I look at it, but seems to run fine.

I presume you have no spacers under the fan pulley and that it is sitting on the pulley flange properly?

Thanks for the link to the bolt, I dont think I've ever seen one of those on all the mini's / engines I've had!

Hope to get back out in the garage soon to have another go at things, just avoiding the cold at the mo!
