just a random idea ive thought up, has anyone ever supercharged and turboed the A series?

i know theres a few production cars with it, micra polo ect
but has anyone thought about this idea?

my research into it shows the supercharger to be fitted between the engine and turbo with an electronic valve bypassing it at certain boost/rev levels.

i know you can get a exhaust valve thingy that bypasses your silencers ala ppc roller and im guessing this may be upto the job. *happy*

Why would you want to do this? I'd say it seems like far too much effort for nothing more then bragging rights.

IMO it would be a good idea if you only want all out power, you could get a big blower and have the help from the charger at the bottom end.............emm lol

never seen it on an a series but have on other cars, you dont need to bypass the supercharger either just feed turbo into the supercharger and the supercharger into the engine

id like to give it a try but i cant find a point.. imo modern turbo's are capable of alot more than a joint super/turbocharged engine

The reason you would want to do it is that you can run an Eaton M45 and a GT1752 at their peak efficiency and provide 30 plus psi boost at low air flows.

I have the parts to do this on a 998 that would theoretically produce 200 nanas. Lots of torque as well.

Too many other realistic projects will probably mean it will not be done.

I know someone who is attempting it on an mx5. Hes also having the supercharger with an on off switch and a clutch on one of the pulleys to activate it.
Not a bad idea, but a whole load of wank in the end.

In boost we trust

I can see the point in theory, folk can say why bother when you can get good results from a t in the first place, but hey you never know until you try it. If you have the time and money give it a bash!! Its only the same as when someone said to me "im fitting a head off a motoebike to my mini, none of the studs line up, you have to cut reliefs into the pistons and piss around making pullies and plates" i thought why bother!!

The point here is that the 5 port head is a big restriction on the A series engines so a massive benefit can be got from making an effort fitting a modern cylinder head. Whereas fitting a charger and turbo offers very little gain for lots of effort so on balance I would give it a miss.

I guess if you had Jim's 16v BMW turbo engine and felt you needed more power then it could be a way to go.

Talking purely theoretically, if you wanted to make a 998 do 200hp, you would need about 35-40 psi boost.

Air flow would be around 21 lbs/min and the pressure ratio would be 3.7:1.

As far as I'm aware there is no such turbo that could provide that performance efficiently.

If you split the work between a supercharger and a turbocharger, both running in the 1.5- 2:1 pressure ratio, then you have a solution.

Whether a 998 could hold that boost is another subject for discussion!

Totally agree but hasnt nic proven that 5 ports are still a formidable apponent! Dont get me wrong i love the k conversion!

I thought about doing it instead of my k head project. But with the modern turbo technology it seemed pointless really. It worked for lancia in the rally cars but i think that the venerable a series may just obliterate itself with that much torque!

Yes this has been discussed more then once, wite the same answers. Does anyone know what happened to that inp with a supercharger and a turbo?
