Well after a day at Avon to check for problems. I came back with a list!

Crunchy gearbox
Missfire
Craving more boost!

I knew the problem with the gearbox. The gearcones have wear on them so the synchros aren't working especially higher up the rev range! Third gear being the worse!

Think the box has done well must have taken about 5 years of abuse!

Also going to get the primary gear rebuffed as the drop seem too noisey!

Well I rebuilt the gearbox using another clubman gearset and new baulk rings, bearings etc. Also had the primary gear rebushed the drop gears were getting noisy. Managed to get it all in and ready late Thursday night to run at pod on Friday. The Renault club im in had hired it for the day.

I was having a good day tuning the car seemed to be making progress until a quick shift from first to second resulted in the gearbox grenading!

Bit worrying really! This was on road tyres on moderate boost. Not sure if the gear broke and cracked the casing or if the casing cracked first.

The box managed about two miles and 13 runs on the strip. Looks like I have a busy week ahead of me :(

Was that gearset brand new too Ron?

Yeah brand new gearset and bearings from Minispares, like I say managed about 2 miles and 12 runs up the strip!

Does anybody know if the MED gearset is the same as the Minispares clubman as I could pick one up today.

Ouch! I'd be tempted to send it back for them to get it analysed. You never know may have been a fault in the manufacture of the set.

I don't think you'll get anywhere with that. These sets were designed for 150bhp, not 250bhp.

I think the most likley something else went wrong to cause this, rather than a simple failure.

Well I have checked the box over, there is no way 2nd and 3rd can be selected together. If that was the case it would more likely be 2nd and 4th together by the way the selector works. 4th gear is fine.

The car is hooking up alot better than it ever has done and is running slightly more power than last year. May be the case broke on a previous run, don't think I will find out!
Im not even gonna bother trying to get warranty on it, as will says I'm asking alot from the box!

Just gonna rebuild and see how it goes. I doubt there's much more I can do without spending big bucks

Ah, but remember 4th hear isnt actually a gear its a shaft...

No matter how well your hooking up, isnt mr titanium using the same gear kit in the rear of his car? that bust be hooking up much harder?

I just find it hard to belive its died so quickly.

I'd be inclined to agree with you Robert. A flaw in the material leading to very early failure as soon as the gears saw any kind of high loading.

I pick holes in everything..

Could the crack in the casing have come before the gears letting go? If the crack has let the two shafts slightly further apart then this will happen. Just like a broken double roller. What does the two big bearings and the 1st motion idler look like?
