HI
I have just got my mini turbo on the road and need some advice on a few things.
I drove it home from work tonight (about 20 miles) and when i got home i lifted the bonnet and all the exaust side of the turbo and down pipe was cherry red hot. Is this normal?
Also i have a problem starting it when it is hot and left for about 5 minits but the float chamber is not hot. but the inlet manifold gets very hot.
I hope that makes sence. Any help would be gratefull
Also i cant get the exhaust downpipe to seal and it is a rite bitch to get to. have you got any tips on that as well.

cheers
mike.

yes its all fairly normal!

try a heat shield between the turbo and the carb :)

As for the seal.. make sure you have the clamp round the right way (one hole is bigger thant he other) and to fit it use a trolly jack under the down pipe to hold it in possition (aka bodgit racing).

Hi Mike..
Turbos do get very hot but its rare for it too glow (although it has been seen) if thats what you mean..
Is the car running standard boost?
A lot of turbo minis have problems with hot starting due to fuel evaporation.. do a search on here for it.. seem to remember something recently

As for the clamp.. you need to open out the smaller of the two holes in the clamp so that the other side can clamp down further,
To make things easier most people put a spot of weld on the head of the bolts so they are fixed to the clamp.. then you only need one spanner
If you cant weld them another way is to use a locking tab with two holes like the ones found on the diff casing to hold the bolts still

Hope this helps

Ok i shall try that with the exhaust.
I have wraped my turbo and carb with the Thermo-tec aluminised heat sheet from avonbar. is this ok to keep it all it cool.
I am ony running 7psi boost.
and this fuel evaporation where dose it happen because my carb don't seem to be getting that hot?

What boost are you running ? Running high boost and caning it will often see the Turbo glowing, but i've never seen it happen on standard boost.
What's your fuelling/timing like ?

Red exhaust is too far retarded.
Heat on inlet is expected for a retarded ignition, unusual that the carb isn't hot however...

Does it have any bonnet vents above the carb?

Downpipe is usually a problem when the standard manifold clamp (which is designed for a 1 3/4" diameter downpipe) is used with the aftermarket (as in the only downpipe you can buy) which measures 2" diameter...

New clamp, or modify your current one...

Mikes minis -You must have just posted while i was typing the last one.
Anyway like Dave says your timing must be way out to make it glow at 7psi. What does it rev like ? i bet it goes flat after about 4000rpm ? Get that timing strobe out !! *smiley*

Timing is 8deg btdc ?at 1500 rpm vac advance removed ? Mark your pulley up, and check advance with rpm. See what it's like at 2000, 2500, 3000 etc

im the worst person on here to say this but get it all rolling roaded by a good place do a search on here and some recommended rolling roads should show up, if you cant afford that do a search on here about what to set your timing to i think theres some advise about setting it at 5000 revs or sommot (cant remember exact ).

setting your co on idle doesnt really do much good it could be nice and rich on idle and under load at 5000 revs it could be leaning right off*smiley*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Mikes minis, hi *happy*
If all the ignition and the fuelling checks out, like the top guru TD says, the problem will lie in the Turbo itself on the exhaust side you will find on strip down that there will be an impeller, blade! Off.
Have known this on two occasions.
Am not saying this is the case, but it may be the worst-case scenario for you,
lets hope not,
It?s worth checking out if all other avenues fail.
Did you know the history of the blower before?
has anyone come across this problem i described ?

turbo like a Reactor & on strip down impelller off? Missing*wink*

most important is to check tdc is actually lining up with the timing mark on the pulley (pulley is two piece and can move round ), or set from flywheel if marked ,
set timing to 28 degrees @5000 rpm vac disconected , see what the idle reading now gives - should be 10 - 14 degrees ,
check that the vacuum unit is working and not leaking then reconect
set mixture to 1.5 - 2 percent c o at idle

Mike,
Best thing you can do at this time is take it along to a good tuner (who knows turbo's) like stuart, and get him to check everything over for you to ensure it's all running properly, then finish it off by tuning it on the rolling road.
Peace of mind, and it isn't that expensive either!

hi again
thanks for your help.
It was the timing i have now advanced it to 12 degrese and it has solved the problem.
the dissy had moved because it wasnot tight enouth and had retarded it loads. (so all is well)
The only problem now is getting the power to the tarmack!!
