Hi everyone,
I was driving home tonight and i could hear a rumbling noise coming from the floor, so i backed off the throttle and let the revs and speed drop. The noise slowed down as speed and revs dropped. At first i thought it was grinding a bearing or something, so i put the clutch in and revved it with no load and the noise stayed the same. So i rev matched to 4th and accelerated and the noise got louder and faster. I babied it home (about 2k's) and have parked it until i decide what to do.
There was a bit of play in the passenger side wheel bearing so i swapped that, but the noise is still there. I couldnt feel any play in the drivers side, but ill be changing that bearing too asap.
The thing that worries me is there is about 5-10 degrees of free slack in the wheel before i can feel the diff engage.
Its got front drums and rubber uni joints.

Are there any other ways i could determine the problem? The engine and gearbox were recond 10 000 ks ago, so im really hoping it isnt broken.
Thanks for your help,
Joe

Sorry, i just edited from a non-turbo mini forum.

Its a stock 998 on a stock diff for a mk1. The whole lot is also 40 years old, so its due a replacement.

No it doesnt make the noise when i sit there and rev it.
It also doesnt start until about 30 mph, but its hard to tell as i dont have sound deadening.
