Compression test should be your first thing to do next.

thats what i was thinkin tom, i have'nt used my since i bought it, what at i looking for on that compression test that to diagnose a valve problom, i remeber you put oil in the plug hole to check for piston ring/bore wear but cant remeber for valves, i know they would be a loss of compression if the valve seats burnt through

Stop guessing and do the comp test. Then go from there. Chances are its burned a valve seat and no amount of pissing about with ignition components is going to help in that case.

is my theory correct then, before i chk the compression, seeing as the engine does'nt rattle/smoke of any colour other than what is normal, then a "half" educated guess points to a prob with the valves/seats

Check your valve clearences but my money is on the head gasket being blown.
If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

obviously have a good look at your head while it's off. Personally I'd be popping the valves out above no 2 for a good inspection. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

my suspisions also make me think it could be burnt valve seat due to running unleaded petrol as the car is an F reg which i'm 98% sure does'nt have hardend valve seats

If its a metro turbo engine none of them were ever unleaded from the factory. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Do the clearences first then check the compression again. Its the easiest thing to do. 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

Am I correct in thinking that if the gasket had blown it would most likely have gone between 2 and 3 giving little or no compression on both? If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Yes that is common, otherwise if it was just low on one cyl on the comp test, it may have blown to the water system. But then the car would be overheating and throwing coolant out of the header tank etc.
