Basically trying to work out where to take the MD for her half century.

We've done Paris the last couple of years and looking to go somewhere different this year. We love Paris, but we've done all the main attractions.

Just 3 or 4 nights, eating, drinking, museums, galleries and wandering about sort of thing, maybe a classical music concert. Must be by train. I do not want to drive and flying is out of the question.

Any ideas?

The West Country

Geneva or Edinburgh both are doable by train.

Another co-incidence.... just don't tell me her DOB is within 3 days of 03/05/60

I've already been told, it's either Las Vegas (where we have both been but seperately on company business) or Rome (to which neither of us have been).

I wanted Iceland to see the Northern lights but apparently that's too cold (as if it's anything different here at the moment...).

Ha Ha, but it's only a couple of months.... 29/2 actually. Which means she does not get a birthday this year, but it will still cost me.

Actually York and Edinburgh keep coming up in discusions. I favour some where in Europe, possibly Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels, Lille etc.

I will investigate Geneva though.

I want to do the Northern Lights at some stage, But maybe make a long trip by Motorhome.

I've always fancied doing one of those short breaks to Europe via coach. Some do multiple destinations. They are not terrbly expensive either and all travel, lodgings and some excursions are included in price. I get a brochure every year from the travel agents but has never gone farther then daydreaming over the pictures for a few hours. I sure hope I will have done it by the time I'm celebrating my half century too. Its only a decade away!

Suck, squeeze, bang, blow........

Edinburgh is good, I've been many times on company business (albeit flying from Stansted rather than by train).

Northern Lights is my wish though although I couldn't even think of driving that far... even with a Motorhome.

EDIT - just realised, 29/02 to 03/05 is exactly 3 months plus 3 days.....

York

I'm from york and it's a lovely place and there is absolutley loads to see although its pretty tightly packed.

I've been to ediburgh too to visit friends and it has all that to see but also has things to do outside of the city centre.

Either would make a good choice IMO

Betwix Harrogate and York

Your's nice (I love it so much I go every day!) and Edinburg is good with lots to do, if you want to splash out look at The Witchery as somewhere to stay (don't show the missus!).

I found Geneva a bit lacking, however, I went slap bang in the middle of the seasons, so all the summer stuff was shut and all the winter stuff still not open! Would be a nice train ride on the TGV mind.

budapest - should be able to get reasonable flights; i'd recommend everyone goes before it changes too much

Edinburgh is a good call normally but the city is screwed up with all the tram works so i'd suggest leaving it a while

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

I've only been to a few european cities, most of them with a lonk cramped drive between them. We wern't there for long, but I found Praque a fantastic city. Defenitely somewhere I would take Wifey. Absolutly picturesque with lots to do and comparably less expensive than the other places we saw (appologies for the bad spelling).

I'm sure Prague is nice, but too far by train?

I can't fly as it would damage my reputation as an Eco-warrior.

I went to Antwerp last month. I thought it would be rubbish as that's what everyone tells you belgium is like, but it was actually very nice indeed. Go there.

Well, the wife likes the idea of Edinburgh.

Priced it up and it will cost more than going to Paris !!!

And it will take longer to get there.

I might stay at home and build engines instead.
