Thinking about my engine, I can't think of a knock sensor (pink sensor?) being a part of what I took off. Is there one on the Metro Turbo? If not, is anyone using a knock sensor, and if so, from what (assuming it works well)?

Cheers!

Jon

touchy!

Metro never had one. If you were lookign at an 'aftermarket' one, you'd need it to be pretty un-sensitive for our three-bearing rattly engines!!!
I'd love to have one however! Have you got a plan, or just testing the water?

No plan, yet, Dave. Just seeing what's out there, and what's working.

Sorry, Alex. I hadn't seen this topic, so thought it hadn't been discussed. I'll search for it.

The Bosch sensors pickup noise from 5hz to 22hz and output is a voltage from 0 to 5vdc depending on the engine noise.
Normal background noise is around the 0.5vdc range and knock is anywhere from 2 to 5vdc.
Summit Racing in the states do a gauge but i don't think it's cheap.

I had a thought about this, some of the wet linered Peugeot engines I have worked on, have a cross-bolted centre main, e.g. bolts from the front and back of the block into the centre main. This also seems to give the location of where they mount the knock sensor. I thought it would be fairly easy to copy this arrangement by drilling a hole through the block to pick up on the main bearing cap, and then fit a knock sensor?
Although I am not 100% sure where the best position for a knock sensor would be on an A series?

Nice! Not sure how it's going to perform, since it's not actually in the chamber, and the threads will probably really affect any kind of reading, but it's a hopeful step in the right direction! I wonder how much that little gem costs...?

Looks like it's still using auditory cues, though, if I interpret this correctly, Dangerous. I like the idea of the pressure type better. There are white-papers that show it to be more accurate, and easier to determine if it's a genuine knock and not noise...

Darn, another one that uses audible cues. Where are the pressure-sensitive setups?

i know its a bit "tacky" but im about 2 days off megasquirting my motor, and i plan on solidly mounting a piezo mic to the block wiht an amplifier and a pair of headfones and manually listening for knock. ok its not particularly practical for daily driving, but will alow me to tune.. sure i have mentioned this before *tongue*

Holy smack, that's a lot of smack! I think I'd rather figure out which Saabs have the setup (I believe they did it on some cars) and get one from a breaker... However, it would still require the magic box. -sigh-

evolution, you did mention this before, and I talked to my turbo-guru buddy, and he said that this is probably the best, cheapest method to test for detonation. The human brain is much better at discerning engine knock from normal engine sounds. I'll probably go this route, too. I'm not made of piles of money like TurboDave, so have to look at realistic options, sadly. *wink*

Almost forgot: Congrats on the MS! I'll be going that route, too. Not looking forward to the learning curve, but looking forward to the results! Which board are you using?

There is another TurboDave??? I figure there is, because you can't be talking about the guy waiting for the paycheck after the next one as the next one is already spent...
