Ive currently stripped my engine down which had an sw5 fitted i never actually ran it with the sw5 so i do not really know what it feels like to drive now while i have the engine stripped would it be worthwhile to get rid of the sw5 and go for the avonbar ph2 turbo cam ive tried searching for a comparison but all i could find was how much people didnt like the ph3 avonbar cam and not really a direct comparison so if you were starting a new build what would you buy the ph2 or the sw5 ?? the engine im going to be running is a 1293 with a t2 hybrid with obviously all the necessary upgrades now from searching the sw5 is relatively good in the 998 setup but is it genuinely any good for the any of the 1300 setup

Cheers Josh

What you really need is all the figures for the angles of the cam lobes. I have never seen them for the ph2 or 3 but for all the other favoured Turbo cams (and thats guessing its for a turbo) all the figures are near as damn it identical. Giving the same lift, duration lift at over lap opening and closing angles etc etc or hair splitingly close.

Own the day

The SW5 and the phase two are like chalk and cheese at opposite ends of the options.

sw5... from ac dodd

Checking height: 0.016" @ lobe

Timing: (Intake): 16/48 (Exhaust): 52/12

Nominal lobe lift: (Intake): 0.281" (Exhaust): 0.281"

Duration (Intake): 244 (Exhaust): 244

Lobe centre angle (Intake): 106 (Exhaust): 110

Lobe separation angle: 108

Lift on overlap: 0.036"

and ph 2

''checking hight inlet 0.012" Ex 0.014

Nominal lobe lift: (Intake): 0.360" (Exhaust): 0.400"

Duration (intake) 264 (Exhaust):280

Full lift at 108 deg

But piper says 110 deg on data sheet ''

phase 2 details from a thread on here by benross . i think the lift may be at the valve with 1.5 rockers ?also i think i read that the lobe seperation angle is 110 degrees .

not much lift on overlap... but quite short duratrion

could be good for a 998 turbo.

I think that the SW5 does not have enough lift/duration for 180hp.

I put the SW5 in mine back in 97 or so. I think it is a great cam. Ive no idea what power mine had, but dont see why 180 shouldnt be a problem. Just get a good head, 1.5 rockers and a suitable turbocharger etc

Doubt this Ph2 cam existed back then though so cant comment on it.

But the SW5 is great, and will happily and very torquily pull 4th gear WOT from 1000rpm ( 1293, 3.1 diff and 13" wheels ) and pulled happily to 7500rpm in mine, although usual shift was around 7k.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will
