This might be a bit of a newbie thing to ask but I've been wondering how it works over the last few days, mainly because I'm approaching that stage with my new build.

How do you/the engine tuners work out how much boost your engine can take?

Do you need to take into consideration all the parts, CR, etc etc and do some clever maths, OR, is it a case of turning up the boost till its 'to much', like the clutch slipping etc?

Look at the compressor map for your turbo. Do some calcs to see where your engine will sit airflow wise. You can then see at what point the boost will move your engine out of the efficient point of the compressor, hence you will just be making heat, and not more power.

Once you've done this, you will have a good idea of where to limit when you are having the car set on the rolling road. Then its trial time, so long as the fuelling is correct, and the ignition timing set carefully, you can try different boost levels. As you go up in boost level, you'll get to a point where either more boost doesn't make more power, or you chicken out because you don't want to grenade your new engine. Thus this is your max boost.

Clutch slipping just means your clutch isn't good enough!

good point on the clutch lol.

i wont be doing any of this myself and the tuning boys with the rolling road will be doing it.

i was just interested in the process with limited number of things to monitor on an A series to check on "how things are going" and as you say now blowing it to bits.
