As the MSA, in its wisdom, have changed the regs this year I need a new helmet. Unfortunately they are expensive, but fear not there are two brands available for good prices approved to Snell SA2005.

We have had the discussion about the V2 helmet before and I have mentioned the Hedtec helmet. Both these claim SA2005 approved helmets for between £110 and £140. However, neither brand appear on the Snell approved list. I contacted Snell and here is the response.

"Dear Mr. Hamer,

Thank you for your inquiry. The certification status of the V2 branded helmets and Hedtec helmets are as follows; the V2 branded helmets were formerly certified for Chinese manufacturer Shengchao Helmets, model designation S-2k. Shengchao Helmets was removed from our certification listings in August of 2008 when the company discontinue production to the Snell standards. Helmets produced on or before August 2008, and contain a valid SA2005 serialized Snell certification decal remain part of the Snell SA2005 program.

We were recently informed about Hedtec branded helmets claims of Snell certification in UK. At present the Snell Foundation has no knowledge of this brand and does not support any claims of Snell certification for these helmets. Please be advised that this may be a case of Hedtec rebranding a model that is currently certified, but the certified manufacturer has not informed us that the helmets are being marketed under this brand. We are in the process of investigating this matter with the assistance of our UK affiliate HPE Ltd.

I hope this information proves useful. Please contact us if you have any additional questions.

Regards,

Stephen D. Johnson
General Manager"

Then a follow up stating

"Mr. Hamer,

I have receive updated information regarding the Hedtec branded helmets. As suspected these helmets are produced for Hedtec by another helmet manufacturer and appear to be legitimately certified.

Regards,

Stephen D. Johnson
General Manager"

So buy the Hedtec as it is basically an old Bell helmet (as I understand) rebranded.

Cheers, i'm guessing i might need to buy one of these before the summer.

Bit concerning that these companies are claiming to be snell approved and snell hadn't heard of them.

I agree Tom, but my piggybank is empty and even the cheapest sparco/bell/omp, etc are £250+. I am happy now that the Hedtec is good for my needs and I think I will go with that.

I am not in the car long enough for a helmet to irritate me too much so I think I will be happy with whatever I get. Mind you just putting a helmet on in a shop is still no test of how it will feel after half an hour.

Very true. I found alot of shop assistants were not helpful. I asked some motor bike fanatics the best way to try a lid on. Good advice.
