First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

how does 101?C compare for the temp of my engine? this was taken as the gauge was just off the highest point on the gauge

optimum power is supposedly at 77?C and im quite alot over this so im presuming the gauge isnt faulty.

am i safe to disconnect the water pipes to the turbo to see if it makes any difference to the temp?

when i drove it around the block it went up to half way and stayed there, then when i got home and let it run for a while it moved up

any suggestions

As for diconnecting the turbo water pipes to try it, yes that will be fine as lots of blowers run with out water. And i would have thought that if your near your limit on cooling then disconneting the pipes might help.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i wouldnt mate, those that run without water cooling are set up to run oil cooled. id doubt that those with water cooled do both?

i honestly cant say.

I ran my water cooled t25 without for a bit, turbo technics said it made no difference for a test set up, but will harm the overall reliabily (remember these turbo are designed now to reach many many thousands of miles)

Spot on SumpNut , it makes no difference but it may not last as long, but we are still talking of a while with out.

sounds like you could have an air lock somewhere ,is it a standard cooling system? if there are any extra parts involved such as the hoses to cool the turbo make sure they can self bleed by the water feed being lower than the return and overall the highest point of the system being the rad can , also check the gauge using a kettle and thermometer

ah ha, thanks stuart ill try that, if theres still no luck ill briefly disconnect the water pipes to the turbo

ill tell you about the system
minispares super 2 core rad
watercooled t2
no heater
turbo connected from the top hose and heatertake off on the head
fan belts tight

im pretty sure the std fans on the correct way round, can someone just remind me which way!

ill also connect up my electric fan,

the smooth face on the fan canter should face the water pump
the other side is ridged
I found very little differnce which way round the fan was on my old 1275 na mg metro lump

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

well you must remember the stat is the MASTER controller of the engine temp if all the system checks out OK
(ie) is the rad up to capacity for the job, the fan OK, no air locks, is the water pump driving etc ?
have you tried removing the stat and slinging it over the hedge an replaced it with a brand new one? #
finally have you plumbed the cooling pipes to the blower in correctley!!!!????????????

I had a similar problem with my 2004 block.
EVERYTHING else was identical - even the water pump, stat, head and hoses were the same as on the block used up to 2003.
I'm convinced that some blocks are just worse than others - maybe a rogue core or something...

Mine was improved by plumbing the heater take-off straight into the top hose.
I then went into this pipe (at the same height as the top hose entry in the rad so as to avoid air-locks or flow reversion) with a 10mm pipe from the turbo. The bottom hose then connects straight to the turbo.

It improved things immensely, but it still runs warmer than it's ever done before. I'm going to run into problems in the USA summer I'm sure. I'm prepared to make a new block if that's what it takes.

I agree, some engines are just cursed with running hot. My old motor ran hot all the time, i had to add an extra rad and a blanking sleeve. In the end i used a front mounted Metro Turbo rad. It was ok then.
This years motor, with new head/block, runs really cold. No extra rads and an 88deg stat. The only mod to the cooling system being a block to head bypass hose tapped into a core plug then into the side of the heat where the heater take off is, seems to have worked ?

My first ever aswell. Came from a running (although high mileage and a little smokey) 92 cooper.

I'll stick to metro blocks from now on.

well i just lowered my return from the turbo to the top hose, and went for a spin, it sat slightly cooler, and when i burbled along an a road it even cooled the engine. i got back home and left it idleing for about 4-5 mins and it went up to just below the H again, although slower than before

its got a 74 stat, which is spanking new and ive tested it, the pump is new, the rad in my n/a 1275 never let the engine go above 2/3s

ill try daves trick tomorrow hopefully otherwise ill wire up the cursed electric fan again (i dont know why but i really dont like them)

Or try by-passing the turbo?

progress from the weekend, with daves trick the car is much better, runs at or below midpiont, however when in traffic it can still some times creep up, not to much of a problem now, but in hotter temps it could be disasterous.

however ive had an idea!!!!!! nect weekend im going to disconnect the pipes to the turbo and try it, if the problem goes i propose to connect the heater valve back up, thus when stuck in traffic i can stop supply to the turbo

car goes fantastically though, s/c's and dumpvalve could well be the greatest sound in the world...ever

Nic get those calipers back to minispares. I was talking to them a while ago and they told me that they had had a bad batch of porous calipers. These calipers are actually made by quite a respected company in the field for minispares.

If you buy a gauge i'd suggest you dont buy racetech as i have had no end of them fail on me in the past. SPA do some nice ones.
