I was happily grinding away yesterday and thought to myself hhmmmmmm that looks a bit chunk (the bracket i mean). so i thought what if it was replaced with some ally brackets. before i could think id whipped the bracket off and weighed it. it comes in at 525g.
Now its off im thinking was it a good idea, have i jeopardized the stiffness? will the ally brackets cope?
I just want to hear your thoughts.

I voted weld it back on, but would have gone with option 3 - drill lots of holes in it and then weld it back on.

Have you bought garage weighing scales yet?? I did at the weekend *indifferent*

Light weight it great but safety is better - stick it back on and leave it alone.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I'm sure the whole bracket will help prevent flexing of the toe board so would be tempted to keep it

I'm not entirely sure what you are on about TBH.

I keep meaning to tap Mark up about those brackets. They are very good.

The GTMs bolt the rack onto the subframe, getting rid of this bit completly.

Not sure if any mods are required to the subframe though.

seems a sensible mod anyway as the rack is less likely to move relative to the wheels.

You can get the bits to do the GTM conversion from:

145 HERNE ROAD
RAMSEY ST MARY'S
HUNTINGDON
CAMBS
PE26 2SY
01733 844839
rossabitz@btconnect.com

You just need a couple of the U bolts and some aluminum blocks, so that the u bolts pull straight when they tighten up.

I'll try and take a couple of pictures of my set up when I'm next in the garage.

You just need to be able to clamp it without trying to bend the rack.

Not sure what cossierick has but by "plastic clamps" do you mean Stauff clamps?
