Hey guys,

just want to hear everyones views on rolling the body shell on to its side. ive got a load of work to do on the under side, dont fancy laying on my back for weeks.
My concerns are damaging the panels or distorting the shell.

Cheers

When I had my jet black I drained the fluids and took the mirror off and just tipped it on its side on a mattress. Didn't seem to suffer any ill effects.

Also my cooper has spent plenty time on its side as a bare sell with just a bit of carpet and a lump of wood to support it.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Mines been on and off both sides many times during the repairs to the shell (piccies in my build thread).

No subframes so in it's lightest possible form but no damage whatsoever.

I used an old quilt but added old pillows where the A, B and C pillars would roll so no load went on the side panel anyway.

Only problem I had was setting fire to the quilt while welding...

As above really with the shell mainly resting on the sill seam and roof seam.

I used to support the car off the gutter with a bit of timber to stop the fell weight sitting on the panels - effectively the shell was resting on the sill seam and gutter.

Only issue i had was that lining up or ensuring doors gaps are good is a bit more of a pain.

just make sue you protect the matress as they can burn!

That'll smell gorgeous once on fire!!

I've previously used old tyres under the sill seam and gutter seam. Don't ignite quite as easily and give you a bit of room to sweep up under the car if you're doing a messy job.

Thanks for your help guys,

Angus it seems that you just have to grip it and rip it. dont think theres anything scientific about it.

I've happily turned bare shells on there sides before, using strategically place car tyres to protect them.

EDIT: Hopefully corrected the grammar.

Scruffy love the plug, very cool, but funds are tight and needed else where so i think its going to have to be old tyres. love the frame though

I would say yes it is only marginally wider than a Mini- actually looking at the pictures it is the same if not narrower. I can measure it for you if you want but only if serious as have terminal Man cough from no1 brat at present - feel like I have been smoking 60 fags today!
