Hi All,
As some of you know I have put a standard 998 back in the estate to get it ready to sell on. anyhow, its all in pipes and wired up but it wont start :(

I did the usual, spark, fuel, compression etc... and it seems I wasn't getting fuel to the cylinder (dry plugs) but the bridge of the carb was wet with fuel.. after much tinkering/adjusting/cleaning I find that if I blow down the float bowl overflow it will fire to life for a few seconds then die...

Its a standard 998, lucas points dizzy and a hs4 carb (external float)

any ideas?

Is the float chamber leaking?

Blowing down the breather will just push fuel out of the jet which is why it's starting I guess.

Maybe a blocked (restricted) jet or pipe to it from the float bowl.

the design shows a distinct lack of imagination,
talk about starting off with a clean sheet of paper, then not bothering to fucking draw on it,lol

have you blocked the over-flow off, I did this when I first fitted a Hif44 and it wouldn't flow any fuel..

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Sticking float/needle valve that the fuel pump can't overcome?

I'd go with the blocked/resticted pipe between float chamber and jet. Sometimes the inner plastic bit can get kinked (unseen from the outside) or crushed where it is sealed to the float chamber.

Otherwise piston sticking so not rising - is it the later spring loaded needle type or the earlier one where the needle has to be centred in the jet ???

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Cheers guys, I too was thinking a restricted pipe, but will give all suggestions a go.

If all fails I will scour the autojumble on Sunday for another hs4

It works...

After thinking about it at work, I decided to stop fucking about with it and popped to minispares and picked up a HS4 rebuild kit (inc new jet)... 30 mins in the garage and brumm it fired to life... cheers all...
