this is the big question. I was wondering if the PCs have cought up with the Mac in terms of speed now a days?

thinking of getting a new computer and was looking at the 21.5" Imac. but it go me thinking i'm not bothered about an "all" in one computer as would a good PC be as fast for doing my photos ect?

Any thoughs?

i've always noticed people who do a lot of photo type stuff like yourself use mac's. absolutely no idea why though, not got a clue on the difference between them myself.

People used to use Apples all of the time for photo work etc as I think that was the platform that manipulation software was made for, however PCs have caught up and are easily on par to the Apples in terms of performance.
Apples tend to cost most money because they are shiny *wink*
I am getting into 3d modelling, animation etc and do it all on my PC.
Also, PCs tend to be cheaper as they more function over form..
I guess it depends on what platform you prefer.

I think thats pretty much down to tradition... people think that Apples are what 'creative' types use so thats what we must always get....

I always thought apples were for people you like to be 'alternative'

lol... no Apples are for the masses now. You can't be alternative and have an Apple - almost everyone has an iPhone, iPod or i(insert word).
I'm too stubborn to change.

mac is more stable when browsing the web very little virus's have been made as it is built on a system similar to linux you can still have all the same programs on a windows setup their are no differences now you can easily outpower a mac with a windows pc macs are just alot more stable and dont hesistate that your about to open photoshop whilst running the internet, messenger, adobe bridge, dreamweaver i have found this very useful where as my window pc would of given up running such programs, at the same time, i mean a well sorted windows pc will cope dont get me wrong but i have now been converted into using the mac for everyday use and find it much more easier to use one other thing was that i usto be a hardcore windows fan hated mac but now im using one everyday, i have always got bootcamp their if i need to run xp on my laptop for the likes of megajolt another thing is that windows are prone to trojans virus's and are easy to attack, yes their is virus software out their to stop this but most of it hogs the majority of your virtual memory which is why your average windows pc will give up when trying to load dreamweaver and photoshop at the same time if your running a virus program

I do a lot in FormZ and I use a PC. Tried a Mac one but just could not get used to it. An they cost so dam much. So my vote is PC.

FormZ... eek I haven't used that since I was in the States.. I'm picking up Maya and Zbrush now :)
I can honestly say in 15 years of owning a PC I have only had one issue with a virus... screwed my computer up and deleted all of my porn :( 'twas a sad day. I just make sure I use a good set of scanners.
RAM is pretty cheap these days, so its worth getting some more so that you can open as many programs as you like. I run loads of programs including photoshop / premiere pro etc and haven't had an issue.
Plus i cant get used to that silly one click mouse. grr

Macs are uber-secure, based on a unix platform. You cab browse all your favorite dirt without fear of your computer catching an STD.

The reason creative sorts use Macs is because many moons ago, Macs supported higher screen resolutions and used (and still use) decent fonts, making them better suited to image work. Things are different now and PCs have caught up, but the Macs are still industry standard.

I can't agree with the build quality of the hardware though. We had 4 out of our 5 MacBook Pros develop faults withing 2 years in my old studio.

That said, I would highly reccomend having one for any imagery work. I couldn't imagine working on a PC every day.

Just get the apple care extended warranty!

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Hmm this debate again :)
I use both heavily at work and to be honest you do pay a premium for the apple logo. PCs have caught up significantly in the last few years, and I personally find Photoshop easier to use on the pc than the mac.
If your used to pc I'd stick with one as the mac os is very different to windows.
Regarding the os, the new windows 7 is brilliant, I've been using it well over a year and haven't had any problems, with 64 bit aswell you are also alot securer, that said any antivirus these days will lock down tight enough.

Hey, i have a iPhone, it supports a lot, but i it wont support the full features of Photoshop,

you may be able to get a limted version (features wise)

My PC Supports Photoshop no problem.

But MAC's are nicer for more of the creative side, I.E. Music, Film, Photo's....

There's an iphone app called PS mobile which is by Adobe, but that only does basic stuff. It's free tho.

I'm seriously thinking about going for a Mac next for my next laptop primarily for photo work. I'd be interested to know what you go for. The only down side is that they no longer make a Mac with a compact flash reader build in.

I use Ubuntu on a cheap Acer laptop. It has the advantage of cheap hardware and a stable operating system without any of the issues of windows. It is set up as a dual boot, so I can run windows if absolutely necessary, but that rarely happens. I don't know if any of the free photo manipulation software available is as good as the commercial stuff available for windows.

GIMP is a very good free photo manipulation tool.
