ok all from the Schenk D400 engine dyno we use, calibrated to 600+bhp, certified by Schenk less than 4 weeks ago. Road spec 7 port v full race 5 port. The graph for the 5 port starts at 4k as the motor wouldn't pull full throttle on the dyno below this happily. The engine was built by a very well respected race engine builder and was fresh. Touted as a 145hp motor - the dyno doesn't lie! - draw your own conclusions!

7 Port:- 1380, 11:1, Calver RE13, 1.5:1 rockers, SC billet throttle bodies, Typhoon management

5 Port:- Swiftune full race offsett 37/31 valve head, 11.8:1 comp, 296 Scatter cam, 1.5:1 rockers, Weber 45, 38mm chokes, dizzy etc.

It really is extremely impressive when you see a comparison made this way. I have been following your various 7 Port posts over the last few weeks. Very good work!

Hi John,

Any ideas what causes the slight power/torque drop on the 7-port around 4700rpm?

Looks bloody impressive mind.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Well that looks like about every 5 port race motor I have ever built Its nice to see that Im not far of the mark, altho most of mine will easly take full trottle well below 4k,
nice one john,
Paul.

Nice comparison, shows the 7 port is very good.
The 5 port should have pulled from 3k easily though with that cam was there something up with it?

I seriously doubt it!

Almost makes me want to keep the mini... have you tried the new 7 port with a 'race' cam yet?

Paul W - on the road/track the cam will pull through from low rpm as its transient -with no load ie accelerating, try making the motor pull from there up a 3:1 hill with the handbrake on - thats what steady state dyno work is. (the owner was really happy with the motor but not the figures -strange eh!)

Paul H - thanks for that I'm all for getting the truth out there and getting past the BS thats spouted - as far as I'm aware KAD and ourselves are the only people to publish engine dyno date - I wonder why that is - truth hurts and doesn't sell?

The head is more than up to more cam work this motor would pull full throttle on the dyno at 2000rpm - imagine what thats going to feel like on the road!- we'll see where we go from here....

"nearly as good as a 998 turbo"! - do you want the real figures from an engine dyno?!

No, but if you put it in a car and bring it to the next TM Shootout, we can make direct comparisons.

Just thought - what twat tried to pass that 5 port as a 145 bhp motor?

I seriously doubt it!

Just comparing apples with apples - of course it'll make an appearance at the rolling road days and Avon park etc - I'm 6-8 weeks away finishing the car its going in. 145hp was the guide the owner had been given from the original builder.

The most a 296 would ever show is 130

PaulH's numbers to stack up for his race 5 ports so I'm happy we have a good comparison going on - you can't argue with real back to back figures to compare.

Yes £1500 for head with valves etc, and £3k ready to go with TBs etc. I think.

If I can find £2k then there'll be a 7-port 998 turbo sometime soon.
