Right , i must of looked through 5 differend threads on water pumps and flow rates and im completely confused.

Ive only had the mini running a few times (probs with mj , fueling etc) but the twat wont stay cold. Ive got a davis craig water pump and after messing on sat ive managed to brake it.

Got the car running and after 5mins it spewed its water out (id left the rad cap off) then decided to put the cap on and see if that would help but it didnt it split the water pump.

I dont want to get into flow rates etc id just like to no what people are using and what rad set up you have. When i got mine i didnt do any reading up i just presumed that it flowed water and was made for cars job done, obviously not

Im running a metro set up, front mounted rad with expansion tank and thermostat blanking sleve.

Ive briefly spoken to si p today and the thaught is thats its been flowing too much water and could of quite easyly got air locked and bust, id did take the top hose off the other week and omg it fired it out of the top, so it seams to kinda make sence.

Any help guys.

Rick

ps, i think in the meantime in going to cobble together a standard pump just to check everything else

Im using a Meziere pump (flow 80l/min or something like that) with chiquecento rad. I don't think these pump like restrictions so to be on the safe side I used a shuttle type thermostat. Been fine for 2 years now, and to be honest sometimes struggle to get it up to temp on cold days. lol

Interesting...

did you find you had to turn the fan on to keep it cool on the motorway at all?

Cheers Nic,

we're not running a controller

Ive often thought about putting a variable resistor in though so i can keep it warm when following slow traffic

No worries joe, it just nice to see whats peolpes thaughts are in reality rather than practice.

Ive just put mine on a switch so the theory was fire the car up then two mins later flick the pump on and i could also leve it on after ive turned the engine off.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Mine runs at 70 degrees most of the time, when mine was idling at 850rpm it would run all day at 80 degrees and no need for an electric fan. :)

Rick I'd really think twice about this. If you forget to turn on the pump then all of a sudden your engine is stinking hot and its trouble time.
A well known member of this board, who shall remain nameless, did this once at Castle Combe, the result a knackered head gasket and a couple of bent valves as they nipped in the guides.
The DON has an electric pump as you know, wired through the fuel pump relay, so that if the fuel pump is running, so is the water pump. Thus it cannot be forgotten about.

I have mine on a switch, it just becomes habit to switch it on now. And it somes in handy to cool the turbo/engine down after you switch it off to avoid heat soak etc.

Mine ran about 20 degrees hotter when my ignition timing was retarded too much.

Sorry to thread hijack, but does anybody know if this pump would be suitable?

I believe the flow rate is about 20liters/min.

Going on from this does flow rate really effect it that much, is the ideal flow rate 80litres/min and what will happen if i fit lets just say a 120litres/min what will happen? will it not flow as well due to the coolant being flown to fast ?
