been looking at getting my own setup for welding our increasing fleet of old motors,
any ideas what to get?
ive been looking at a murex saffire kit for £225 containing everything but a trolley and the gas bottles of course.

Check your buildings insurance. Storing Acetylene, which is the one of the most volatile substances known to man, may well void any insurance, which is why, we at work pick the cylinders up from the supplier, and then take them straight back, full or not, when the job is done. Really really bad in a fire!!!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

oh shit thats not so good!
ill have my old man look into the insurance side.
the only real reason for doing the gas in the first place, as where the cars are stored theres no power supply and bringing them round the house isnt really an option at the momment

you need to be licence to hold oxy acetylene rigs, cant even have porta packs now. i have a big oxy rig but as me gas has ran out i can no longer get it filled up anymore..... but to be fair i have achieved so much more with my gas mig than i ever did with my oxy set.

Good thing with gas welding is you don't have to be so critical cleaning the metal up. Handy with MOT work.

If you really want gas setup, why not go for oxy-propane? I'm not sure it is hot enough for gas welding, but its certainly good enough for heating things up etc, without having to have acetylene in your garage.
I have to say though, I have access to oxy kit at work, so I use it there on the odd and it is the odd occasion I find I can't do without it.

I have not heard about any licencing either and oxy acetylene is a important part of my work. That is not to say that the 'industry' is not getting tighter on regulations, cos it is. Its like applying for a passport just to get onto building sites these days!!

what about large bottles of any compressed gas or liquids at home....oxygen, Argon etc? All not safe in their own right.

Looking good. A gnats too hot or too much oxygen....but still very good. :)

as far as I am aware you might want to look into your house insurance with storing oxy acetylene, might find its void if something happens :( i find gas welding good but tends to buckle panels maybe it’s just me, I like mig and tig

if you do go oxy/acety get a decent set of flashback arrestors

my old man told me when he was very young doing his apprenticeship, a bottle let go in a factory near him down in deansgate manchester, blew through the roof and came down near kendals

"Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

"did you know you can toast potato waffles?"

well ive still not bought anything yet. ive only got to do my external V test peice and some brazing and i can move onto a different type of welding.
i was thinking Tig.
but the gear is bloody expensive for a good setup.
i know Tom got a chinese version. so maybe he could give us an update on how the machine is doing
