A quick question for those A series experts.

I have the engine out of the car and I have been looking over things. The remote shifter mechanism that sticks out of the bottom of the Diff/Engine casing is held in with a large pin. The pin seems to have some washers/shims to centralise it in the case. There seems to be some wear in them, you can get some side to side movement. I presume this is a bad thing. The car has always been a bit stiff to engage gears. I wonder if this is contributing.

Anyone know?

Thanks for any help
Graham

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I always shim this item quite tightly, but remember, that it does need to move.

Vegard, I presume wear in these components doesn't help with gear change?

Of course not. The problem is that the shafts wear, not the easy to change bushes. OS bushes cannot be used as there are splines on the ends of the two long shafts.
I searched and found some good ones, the other options is to have metal sprayed on and milled down in a lathe.

If there are no regulations, I see no use for a remote change box apart from originality.

I was thinking the same... and you cant swap the cases either. I have a couple of spare remote boxes that I started to collect as I realise it old stuff now and people in the local club were chucking out. I will check the shafts and see what has the least wear.

Why remote - its original no other reason buts its always has a stiff change.

I like the remote box purely for the extra engine steadying, I seem to be able to kill steady bushes fairly quickly on rod boxes...

You've got a valid point, but I'd rather have the rod box and a bunch of engine steadies.

even with 4 steadies i still seem to be able to wrench the lump loose :/

although i havent tried it with the more modern MPI style bushes yet .

My remote has huge amounts of wear, about 3-4 mm sideways movement in the selector.
The gearstick moved a lot but i could still find gears (no one else could though :))
