Hello,

I have just got back from the garage where I had booked my new mini to get rolling roaded. They hooked it all up, looked quite confused, and told me there was nothing they could do as my car had to many "clever gadgets" as they called it. The main issue was becuase of the ignition.

The previous owner said it has a fully mappable mega-jolt ignition. At the garage they said that their equipment could only handle up to 'twin-spark' but that mine was doing more than this. As a result, some readings were coming out as double (like rpm) and some they could not get at all.

I'm sorry I'm not very clued up about this sort of thng. Has anyone got any advice as I really want it set up correctly but not sure where to go next?

Thanks :)

I went to Sigma in Gillingham, Dorset. Wasn't particularly pleased with their attitude and service, they barely spoke to me and seemed quite dismissive. Fair enough if they couldn't do anything for me but they were pretty rude.

Ok mate no probs. So does a RR have to be megajolt friendly? I'm based in Yeovil, Somerset. I'm waiting to hear back from a garage called Performance 3000 to see if they think they could accomodate it.

I'd look at going to a Mini specialist if I were you mate. Slark arn't too far from you, and they are perfectly happy to setup megajolt, and have done many turbo minis in the past.....

Anyone who can't operate the rollers for a car with edis ignition is surely just plain useless? seeing as it's fitted to just about all 90's fords.....

yeah if you dont know how to read or adjust the map then the guys at the rollers will need to know what to do.

Do you have all the software and a laptop? as they normally wont..

You need someone who knows the system in order to map it.

As said above - Slark are good.

I might have a RR too if things go to plan in the not too distance future *happy*

The previous owner gave me a disk with the car which I've only just remembered about, which was stupid of me. How will I know if it is the correct software?

Brilliant, found the disk and looks like it is all the configuration software for the ignition (version 3).

If I took this next time, wherever I go, will they be able to sort me out?

I'll have a look into Slark

No not by any means. As an analogy, it is like taking a Ford to a Volkswagen dealer. OK they will probably be able to change the brake pads for you, but they are not going to be able to plug into the ECU and program a new key to the car for example, because they don't have the right software, and connection leads.

If you are taking a car to the rolling road, then you either need to confirm with them in advance that they support your specific version of MegaJolt and know what to do with it, or otherwise you need to take a laptop with the software on and working, and the lead to connect to the MegaJolt.

Ok point taken. I'm going to contact Slark tomorrow as they sound great, wish I'd heard of them earlier! I now know the specifics of the ignition so hopefully I'll be able to get somewhere with them.

Thanks for all your help guys

I believe slark will need you to take a laptop, software and lead with you.

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Probably best to have a read of this:

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums//index.php?p=vt&tid=5741

All 5 pages. It explains a lot about MJ and iirc where to get parts etc.

Steve Harris near Ringwood - 01725 517999 or

Neil Slark at Amesbury - 01980 624477.

I've been to both in the past as I'm reasonably close to each.

Both are Mini friendly but may not be Megajolt or Megasquirt experts - enough to get by if you take your own laptop with the software and your map loaded you can drive the software and edit your own map - its very simple for you to make the changes requested by the operator.

Technically it shouldn't matter where you go as long as you have the laptop and can manoeuvre around the editing facility but it depends on how confident you are. It really is as easy as it sounds.

For cables, you'll probably need a 9 pin RS232 male end to connect to th MJ and the other end depends on how old your laptop is. If new, it'll probably be USB so you'll need a male USB end or an adaptor. Careful though as some USB/9 pin cables are shite. Buy a quality one - they're usually about £10 on the net. If an old laptop, you might already have a 9 pin serial port.

If in dire straights, give me a bell - PM me and I'll pop down.

Good luck with it.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Worth noting that if you don't have a laptop irs worth looking for an older one. Mine is About 10 years old, runs win 95 and is perfect for mj as it has a serial port build in.
