Anyone seen the con rods from some of the latest small car petrol engines?

The main beam is triangular with nothing in the middle and the big end cap was originaly part of the whole rod, which has then been fractured off, thus reducing machining processes. Trick stuff!!

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I didn't but I have seen the new Insight crankshaft arrangement and the 5 caps are actually connected in a single part : must be stiffy !

I did see cracked rods on some small VAG engine. Could have been a 1.4 or 1.6

The modern Jaguar V8 engines have also got this "fractured" big end rods. I guess they can do it as the sintered rods are very hard and brittle. Makes honing them a bitch though *wink*

They are still made from forged steel, it is a special steel that is fracture split, and does so along the grain structure, meaning it splits and fits back together perfectly.
Where I work we make this grade of steel for various OE manufacturers, we call it "Fractim".
It makes a cost saving, as the rod can be bored to size, bolt holes drilled and faced, and then split. No more machining operations required.
