gonna be upgrading my diff very soon (next on the list) i'm thinking of fitting this one http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=35941#

just need to know if its any good? what others are available? its a road car currently running about 120bhp, but i will be taking it down the strip as often as possible.

is it a straight swap? so i can just lift the engine out and swap the diff over without stripping the whole engine down. i'm going to change to a 2.9 at the same time so i'll just take off the end cover to swap the pinion over? right?

cheers, Nick.

I got one of these and it seems to be really well made. I'll give minispares one thing, they may not always be cheapest but the stuff i find generally to be pretty good, although i've had to point out some obvious manufacturing hickups to them in the past. There is a lot of crap out there being sold into the mini market.

it is possible to swap the pinoin with the speedo drive cover off. just have to lock engine buy selecting 4th gear first then use a flywheel locking tool, but be careful as its not a ideal way of doing it.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

sorry i jumped the gun a bit. I predicted the diff had broke before stripping the gear box. but i stripped it today. and it had stripped the teeth off the pinon gear.
I have never come across this before?
have any off you got any ideas of why.
i am running a 3.1 (19/59) could i have got gears teeth pitch wrong or are they all the same.

I've never heard of it happening - only when something else fails like the mainshaft double roller bearing, which then allows the pinion and Crownwheel to separate slightly, breaking the teeth off at the tips.

Did you use them as a matched set - ie can you be sure of the origins?

I am not sure of its history?
i rebult the gearbox with s/c gears 4 weeks ago so the bearings should be ok.
I am going to split the eng and box tomoro so i will see if i can get some picks up for you.
so what do you recon should i put a standard one back in it. and put it down to a bad crown wheel and pinon.

If you can find another CWP, that you know is good, i'd use that.

Fact is, there is a greater stress on a higher FD than on a lower one - IE a 4.1 diff will really try and blow the cases apart.

It could just be that they used a strange tooth form on the 3.1, but I doubt this very much... More than likely, you were unlucky.

Thought: - You did orient the pinion such that it was wearing on the same side as it's always worn (the crownwheel is offset to one side of the pinion).
If you'd reversed it, it would be loading up on the small 'virgin' surface, which 'could' lead to premature failure.

Something to check when re-assembling....

I bought a car from the UK two years a go with a broken box. (Remeber Dave?)
The ONLY fault I found in the gearbox was this:

I cannot understand how this had happened because the double roller was fine, and so was the CW. The differential endcover bearings were fine as well.

Clearly this is more common than I realised.
What ratio was it Vegard?

yep it was the same as the pick vegard put up.
The berings was all fine ect.
luckely the magnet in the gear box stoped the swarth getting to the oil pump.
so a good wash will sort the box.
