Hi all,

Topic on side mount rads.

I have been doing some searching on fans. From what I have read most people opt for the 4 blade or plastic with some moving to electric.

I have the rad and engine out at the min, I'm looking to make the rad more easily detachable than using my current MK1/2 surround, either by using a mk3 surround or converting the existing surround to utilise the single bolt bottom fitting. However with the Mk1/2 inner wing cowling on the car even with the mk3 rad surround its too tight to squeeze the rad and surround past the fan.

This leaves me with modding the bottom of the surround, however I was thinking this would be easier with a single/2 blade fan as the cut out could be smaller.

Either that or ditch the mechanical fan and run an electric

I haven't found anything on using just a two blade? Has anyone used one?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Go the electric & ditch the mechanical fan.
I have, and it takes me 2 minutes to remove my radiator. Keeps cool enough on 42C days.

mmm thinking about it.. I'm not sure I can get one to fit without cutting the inner wing which I dont want to do as I have an old Mk2 which is in good nick.. I doubt you could get it to fit inside the inner wing cowl?

Couldn't you fit it as a push fan on the outside of the inner wing? You might have to make a cowling to seal the inner wing to the rad though

GaryOS I have the cowling on the inner wing and I use the rubber seal I just didn't think it would have enough effect without being "stuck" directly to the RAD?

well so far in order for cooling airflow at Idle:

6 Blade coolest
4 blade very close second almost equal
2 blade wont keep it cool if you have to idle for long.

no differnce cooling using any of them at speed. except the noise levels increase in reverse to the above with the 2 blade being much lower volume...

Electric next in my simple testing.

You can fit a Kenlowe style thermo fan directly to the back of the radiator without trimming any sheet metal.

Although you can't really see it, the fan is fixed to the radiator with the supplied fitting kit. I just unbolted the shroud & mechanical fan - it can all be refitted if I ever want to.

P.S MadMk1 - wicked car and install.

So far so good. I ran the car tonight so not the hottest of days but never got above N without using the heater in the car.

Sorry I dont have a temp i only have the standard gauge. I'm using the fan made by Mr K.Lowe and the thermostat kit that fits between the rad fins.
