Finally making some progress with the MPI.

Just got a couple of issues to sort out. The biggest problem being the CAS signal is being lost by the Emerald ECM @ low RPM, under load it's fine.

As the CAS is an inductive sensor and the faster the flywheel passes the sensor the greater the voltage - this made me think I hadn't shielded the signal and earth wires.

So I've stripped a small section of the loom (which I made myself) and low and behold - I forgot to shield the bloody wires....... *happy*

I'm gonna strip the full loom (needs a wee bit tidying up anyway), but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how to shield the wires?

I was gonna twist them together, run the pair though progressively thicker heatshrink or build up layers of self amalgamating tape.

BTW - the sensor is working correctly - I've checked the signal using an oscilloscope

in the past i have done 2 wraps of tinfoil, ( the regular cooking stuff) then tape ( or hear shrink) around it for safety and earth the tinfoil,

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Thanx for that chaps.

I'll give the tinfoil method a shot before spending more cash.

Thanx for the excellent link Sprocket.

Would it be necessary to earth the foil at both the sensor end and the ECM or will the ECM do?

Coolio.

Just need to get the IAT sorted and then it's back to the RR.

Tin foil is a half arsed fix, do it right mate *wink*

If you are that tight for cash, PM me your address and I will send you some screened cable that will do the job

Only ever ground one end of any screened cable in ANY aplication, that way it acts as a drain for induced voltages, rather than act as a conductor.

Thanx for the kind offer Sprocket - it's really appreciated.

I'm tempted to take you up of the offer, but I'll just wait for the next instalment of my student loan to come through - it's due 6 March so I'll get the screened cable then.

But seriously, big thanx for the offer.

Seriously mate, if you want some, just ask. I use this stuff at work in reels of 100meters. I am not going to miss 2meters

Right.

As the nice chappy Sprocket is sorting me out with some shielded cable (what a nice dude!) - I made a bodged cable as a stop gap.

It's made all the difference. Getting a nice stable idle.

Once I get the proper stuff - I'll sort the loom.

Cheers Sprocket
