I'd buy one for ?30 if I didn't already have a gauge.

It'll work fine as far as I can see, they're not a compicated bit of kit. But for ?30 it's not worth the hassle of making one yourself.

wideband ones are being looked into on the 'boost retard ECU' that is currently undergoing cold weather testing... LOL!!!

?30? wow. As Wil says, you can't go wrong for that price!

They are 1000% better than nothing.

If I had a mini turbo, that was tweaked even slightly, I would pay over a ton for even a basic one. As it is, ?30 gets you a basic one, and a ton gets you something slightly better.

I use the one from my engine management software - but that is all i've ever used for setting up my mixture (I filed my own needles according to my lambda display), and it works for me! I think Ben/Wil are the same.

It won't stop you killing your engine - it's like an oil pressure gauge - you have to watch it - but the first misfire, or if your motor feels sluggish as the boost starts coming in, this will let you know if it's mixture related.

Yep, it's generally the first thing I look at if the engine feels "strange".

Basically, the Lambda sensor generates a voltage between 0 and 1 V depending on (is it oxygen or Co2 levels in the exhaust?). anyway, the gauge illuminates an LED every 0.1 V, hence 10 LEDs.

It's accuracy will depend on components used in the gauge. I reckon if it's reading somewhere around the top end of 'ideal' just below rich that'll be ok.

My thought was if its on a normal car the sensor may be getting voltage from ecu and then going up to the gauge, but if the lambda is producing a small voltage then should b ok then

I bough my lambda from our local Partco I got a 3wire so that I would have a heated lambda as these work inside a minute where an unheated one can take over 5 mins (I have been studing a bit this last 48 hrs)I have the lambda fitted and am using a volt meter at the moment while I wait for my meter. The job is a good one as I have been able to fix a few fueling probs I have had and some I didnt know I had.

could someone point out what the different wires are and things, like one wire obviusly tells you the basics, all that we really need, then what advantages like heated and stuff up to 4 wires??

thanks! Dan

Here are some links to info on Lamdas
http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/lambda_sensors.php

http://www.picotech.com/auto/lambda_sensor.html

The one wire is the wire that gives the volage signal
Two Thee and Four are all part of the heating element
The sensor I got had wiring instructions with it and it was simple signal wire and two for the hater the heater wires can be wired any way round one to earth the other to posative.
Heated will give acurate info sooner as it dosnt have to warm up for 5 miles.
All this info is a combination of experimenting over the last 2 days and lookig up Lamdas on Google
Allan
I didnt realy experiment I just fitted the Lamda using a bit of an old exhaust I got from a local exhaust fitter witch I welded in just behind the gear lever rods and wired it up to my volt meter simple as that.
