My Boiler has just bloody packed in, and from reading its model number is from the 1960's! lol

Has anyone had one replaced recently? Just trying to get an idea of cost...ive got a feeling its going to cost some. *frown*

Cheers

Depends how big your house is, but 2k is an average. The government will give you £400 I think as part of the boiler scrapage scheme.

Ive got a 2 bed semi detached. But tbh the boiler (when it was working) struggled to heat it as it was, so was thinking of gettting something slightly bigger.

Im just looking into that scrappage scheme now. Although apparently my current boiler needs to be working to qualify, which I can't understand.

2k is the figure I had in mind. *oh well*

Having had mine done about 4 years ago, you need to budget between £1500 and £2000 unfortunately.

If any plumber /heating engineer wants more that £1500 to replace existing , which meens not moving to another location, if you pay any more than £1500 they are rippnig you off, these twats can get a branded worcester boiler big enough for 3 bathrooms and 12 rads for £800 . its a days work changing a boiler and if they tell you otherwise thay are lying,
i know lots of plumbers

agree with carl i days work at most unless you go for a combi of course.

one of the best out there is a valiant i put in a 32 kw one last year and its the dogs doo darrs. heats the hot water up just like that and heats the house a treat,

but depends on your system as system boilers are cheeper than combi's, but if you go for a combi then a water softener is a must , if not then the limescale will kill the heat exchanger in about 5 years

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

it will depend on the spec of boiler but the going rate seems to be around £1500 upwards. It will depend on what has to be changed or altered. A good shift should change over most boilers though.

to soften the blow, we changed ours in the summer and in the 3 months over Chrimbo, we saved £200 over our bill for the same time last year so in theory it could pay back relatively quickly

Cheers guys, at least I have a ballpaark figure,I'll have a search about.

Im not to sure if its worth changing to a combi or not, alot of people rave about them but I really don't know if they are worth the extra tbh?

We have a combi and at this time of year it is great as the hot water comes through really quick because the whole boiler is warm as the heating is on. In the summer you have to run off about a gallon of water before any hot water comes through. Being on a water meter, and from Yorkshire, this brings me to tears *hehe!* . I believe some combi boilers now come with a small reservoir of water that they keep warm so you don't get this problem.

the issue with a combi is normally the flow rate for hot water; they start to struggle when demand come from more than 1 tap at a time. The higher the flow rate the better.

I think its the valve thats broken that brings in the main burner, as the pilot light is still on and there is voltage to the solenoid.

The problem is that it is so old that the parts apparently aren't available anymore, and to be honest its not worth repairing as it'll need replacing in the near future. *oh well*

The boiler is a Baxi bermuda 552....bloody old! The condition of everything else seems ok, but im no plumber. lol

if its that old then change it.

the post further is is correct on running water of to get the hot through, but bigger kw eg 32 then it will happen quicker, mine has a hot start function so keeps the hot water between 30 and 60 deg c, only oil fired boilers has a proper resivior about 10 ltrs as the cant heat the water as quick as gas.

but wil be cheeper to convert to a new boiler if you have a system boiler and keep the hot water tank, but as said before if your water is hard then fit a softner as most heat exchangers are stainless or ally and lime scale kills them but not a issue on system boilers with inhibeters in them

Junk that thing from the 1860's and just get a combi in there

I have to say I don't like combis and when I replaced mine I kept with the tank system. I don't have a tank in the loft though. The cylinder is a pressurised cylinder fed direct from the cold mains. That way cold and hot water are at the same pressure. Hoked up to a standard mixer shower and you get more or less a power shower.

I also don't think the way we use water suits a cylinder better. Also I can add solar panels to the system later on if I am feeling green.

Ive got a guy coming over tomorrow to quote for a new boiler, it'll be interesting to see what it'll cost!

Carl, do you have to be a plumber to be classed as trade on that site? They won't show any prices without me signing up. *oh well*
