Is it any wonder that our bearings crap out so quickly in the mini transmissions... I took some oil samples last night, iso particle contamination codes of 22/22/21 were seen. This is oil that hasn't been changed in about 1500 miles incidentally, and should be swapped out.

I know the numbers mean little to some, but journal bearings should be 17/15/12 and ball bearings at least 16/14/11 on the ISO scale (15/13/10 preffered).

I'm trying a special new filter tonight to see how well it cleans up the oil *smiley*

I'll then be trying new engine oil to see what that measures. Who wants to take a guess on it not achieving 16/14/11...

I borrowed a Parker LCM20, I believe it costs circa $12,000.

If you shop around, you might find a 5% off coupon somewhere?

so these figures are like a grading of the shite in the oil, the higher the numbers the coarser it is?
In my quarrying analogy! its coming out 'crusher run' as opposed to '5mm and down' aggregate'?

A silly question to ask you Dave if its your engine were talking about here but is the by-pass in the filter housing blocked off?

Yes, the bypass is blocked off of course... The simple matter is that an engine and trans sharing the same oil is never going to be good. I honestly didn't know that it could get 'this bad' however! No wonder the mini automatic transmissions always were plagued with problems.

oh, it was valvoline 10/40 oil, and a unipart premium filter - but as I say, largely irrelevant...

I'm not convinced a simple oil / filter change will even get close to where we need to be.
