...but took the head of and theres nothing there!!
lol, another thread on behalf of feeble,
he phoned me and said he looked through the spark plug hole (cylinder one) and could see a metal thing inside it looks like a washer and tried to use a magnet (the telescopit ones) but lost it and found nothing more.
he turned the engine over (while ont he phone) with NO.1 spark plug out and i coudl even hear a baaad ratleing over the phone. so he took the head off (hence the question RE: head gasket)
and there is nothing there it is empty as it should be, the valves are intact (tho he said with some pitting but they are all there)
he is on his way with pics etc but just to get the bal rolling incase someoen sees this before he comes or something, anyone any ideas yet?

cheers!!, Dan

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

maybe! valve insert bouncing around in and out of the seat which its pressed in drops when you had crank it
but when the motors running its just enough to keep it up there because of the higher RPMs

check by removing valves and testing the insert
you will find the problem
just a thought*wink*

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

You need a valve spring compressor. Compress the spring, remove the collets, remove compressor and hey presto !

sounds like his car is playing tricks on him for getting rid of it...

A 'washer' is unlikely to make a ratling noise when turned over by hand, but when you say 'turn over' you surely don't mean the starter motor was used????

yes, he used the starter and it ran then he cut it out. my mum even said she heard it when i was on the phone! (the ratleing)
we are thinking it might have gone out of the exhoust valve and into the turbo now tho, will keep yous updated, he has just got back from work and doesent have a valve compressor, but he could have got one at work.

lol. some people should not be allowed near engine`s .... stater motor !!! YHAL.
If some WAS clackering around inside the bore , it would have made some marks somewhere ??

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

he said there is a verry small dent on the piston, but nothing else, just a tiny mark.
sorry i should clear that up. lol
he thought he couls see it so rolled it in gear to try and bring it closer to the top and lost it, tried with a magnet but coudlent find it. then he tried it on the starter when it seemed to have disapeared all together.
i dont actually know why he was looking through the plug hole iether lol.

Dan

EDIT - forgot to mention he siad the bored are absolutley mint.

Leson learnt. He's VERY lucky if he got away with that...
If i saw something in a cylinder, i'd never crank the engine!!!

gutter now hes gotta strip it down grrr i bet hes tamping! anything missing off the head vavle insert ect if everything is intact he must be imagining things, he musta been in a weird mood to look down there any way.

I think feebs isn't telling us everything...

I wouldn't look in my plug hole for a washer, unless i'd dropped a washer into my inlet manifold...

I hope he's taking the turbo off the manifold to remove the washer from the turbine housing aswell - or the turbo will definately suffer (assuming there was a washer after all)

Feebs - do you wear specs? Are you sure a comical friend hadn't stuck a tiny washer onto your glasses, just before you looked in the sparkplug hole? LOL!!!

ok, just spoke to him, his computer just does not want to get on the net so it could be a while yet.
he said he was looking down the plug hole, becouse he did the timing but had to make his own timing mark on the crank pully bcouse there was not one there. but he oculd hear a ratleing/knocking type noise, so i thought it might be pinking, check timing again, so he was checking he got TDC right, that is the reason he was looking down the hole.
so if it was the washer that was in there making the ratleing, its been in there for a while but now its disapeard. i cant wait for the pics now lol
i am just a mesenger btw, i have not seen the washer or seen the car for months in fact.

aaah the days of only having a mini as your only car.....I can remember how bloody frustrating it was when mine used to bust and I would have to get the bus to the factors to buy parts to mend it....

These days despite my best efforts at selling cars I seem to maintain a fleet level of about 6 most of the time.......

So. You look through the spark plug hole and see a shiney round thing, you rotate the engine (with car in gear) and it dissapears.

IMO what he saw was almost deffinately an open valve (which is pretty normal). so it's hardley suprising that he can't find anything.

I suspect that the rattling is something unrelated.
