My dads mate who used to own/run a machine shop tells the tale of the guy who built an engine up with all new shells etc etc, plenty of graphogen. Stupidly he didn't check the oil pressure and got 10 miles down the road on the graphogen before it either seized or knocked itself to death (can't remember which). He hadn't put oil in it. I know a chap who builds rally engines and swears by graphogen, he also has a very simular story about an engine that was built on the stuff and started without oil, again ran for a considerable length of time before it failled. There's an article on engine lube in Mini Magazine April 2010 issue 171 which tests/assesses used engine oil from a Turbo Mini.

One for the bodgers (i.e. me) I use that 'stop smoke' oil. Really thick gloupy stuff. Never had a problem. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

Most of what has been mentioned will be Ok, but its probably more important to get oil pressure before start up any way.

There seems to be some confusion between assembly lube & oil, they are not the same thing. Isambard Kingdom Brunel said:

If you 'prime' the the oil system before you put the head on, you will have to prime the oil system again when the head is installed.

Always willing to learn Laurence so can you please tell me why the engine would need to be primed both after and before head installation, please. |

Well, without the head fitted, only the block etc will be primed.

If you have a turbo it will need priming. I agree. Also priming without the head on will ooze oil everywhere out of the top of the block. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

If you 'prime' the the oil system before you put the head on, you will have to prime the oil system again when the head is installed. I have only ever used EP90 to lube the shaft bearings during assembly which is quite adequate. I only ever use WD40 to lube the pistons/rings etc during assembly, I never use any sort of oil. The WD40 allows the rings/bore to 'bed-in' whereas oil doesn't. If the engine is assembled several months prior to start-up, apply some more WD40 prior to start-up to make sure there is plenty WD40 on the bores when you start the engine. You can't over lube the bores with WD40, because the excess drains away, (but don't fill the piston dishes with WD40). If you add oil on the rings, how long will this be here before it's replaced with oil fromt he sump? 15 revolutions? Rings should be installed with oil, NOT engine building lube. Using just WD40 is just plain silly in my book. That doesn't lubricate at all. I use oil on rings/pistons (mineral running in oil) and Torco lube on bearings. On camshafts and followers ( just the base) I use special cam building graphite lube. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:
