Hi!

We had a little discussion about blocking the oil filter's bypass valve lately.

As far as I read so far, a part of the oil is going past the filter - unfiltered - via the bypass valve.

So it sounds sensible to carefully stick to filter change intervalls and block off the bypass. BUT: is the bypass maybe needed in high RPM/load situations due to lack of passageway through the filter?

My guess would be "no".

So - is the bypass constantly in use (opening far too early)? Is it sensible to block it off in a tuned roadgoing engine?

Cheers,
Jan

I would say block it up, you can't have any unfiltered oil entering the engine.

There is no way to regulate when the valve will open (at what pressure) & there's always a chance that it can remain open so the oil will never be filtered.

You can remove the valve etc then tap threads into the hole & insert a threaded plug, but I had mine brazed shut, easy-peasy!

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

the usual size is 5/8" UNF hex taperd plug fitted.

it does take a few extra seconds for the oil pressure to build up from cold, but....... it makes sure its filterd, in time this would wear the shells a tad more and reduce thier life somewhat but a the expence of a totall wipe out of the shells with unfliterd oil especially with a SC setup

I have a turbo oil pump and all new bearings and the oil pressure is very high - about 70 psi hot at 3500rpm.

If I block the relief valve what effect will this have, especially when the oil is cold and i see 80+psi (Ihave heard of oil pumps splitting with the hydraulic pressure)

this is only the relief valve in the oil filter,

NOT the one in the block that controls oil pressure.

This exists on every car. It is in the filter body however, not the head.
Blocking this off is fine so long as you never operate your engine below freezing and ESPECIALLY if you live in a cold place like canada.

If you wonder why, then put a cup of oil in the fridge. Then see how well it flows after a few hours.
Then try putting it in the freezer. The oil turns to peanut-butter consistency at this temp - hence won't flow through a filter element either, and hence why by-passes are fitted. *wink*
