Hello,

Ive just finished putting my custom bulkhead box into my mini, and etch primed it today.

ive sprayed my mini twice before, both times in gloss black cellulose....

now once its colour sanded and polished, it does look very nice. however im getting anoyed at celluloses softness/ weak resistance.

a wiff of brake fluid and it pulls the paint straight off, etc etc etc

so im debaiting getting some 2k paint and doing the bulkhead with it.

im just wondering what experiences other people have had, how does 2k hold up against the heat from the turbo?

ive been told celly is more resistant to heat ??!?

Celulose gets tacky as it gets hot, no surprise as its a solvent based paint. 2K paint is a thermoset paint and much more resilient to pretty much everything celulose is not.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Brake fluid will kill all types of paints.

2k is miles better, as jason says brake fluid will kill any paint but if you get it off prity quick the 2k should be fine ,pluss its miles more durable.

Ive painted rockercovers ,gearboxes etc with 2k and its been fine, am sure a few have painted there engine blocks (so long as there scrupulusly clean ofcorse).

Make sure you wear a proper mask and dont over harden thinking it will make it go off quicker

Out of interest Rick, what happens when you put too much hardener in?

It will nip up will the shine or even worse craze and look a rite mess, if it nips it can be buffed to help but not whats you want to be doing.

Most hardeners come in standard, fast or extra fast anyway

Thanks for all the replys :)

Ive heard theres a type of brake fluid thats kinder to your paint ? is it any good?

I have a twin filtered mask that says its for use with paint spraying. Im only going to use 2k on the bulkhead and ill paint it in my garage doorway, then leg it once finished.... sound safe enough ? i know an airfed mask is the prefered method, but i dont have a second compressor to run one.

ive not used 2k, but heard horror stories about people that have without the proper breathing gear, i wouldnt take the risk tbh

re the brake fluid, yes, i use silicone brake fluid and think its marvellous, but alot of people dont rate it?

it doesnt absorb water, doesnt ruin the seals in your cylinders, doesnt ruin your paint etc, just a bit costly

I use the same compresser for both spraying and my air fed mask. BUT, I have the compressor inlet filter assembly ducted to OUTSIDE my garage if that makes sense. So the compressor doesn't pump back in the cyanides from the 2K.

There are a lot of filtered masks on the market that actually have the right charcoal type filter to allow use with 2K anyway, they are just time limited compared to a fresh air fed mask.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

problem is im not sure if my compressors man enough to do both! i believe air fed masks need 5 - 8 cfm, trouble is its an old compressor i got of a company that went bust, so i dont really know its spec.... its a 100ltr tank, but only 240v so i doubt its over 10cfm. so i wouldnt have thought it would be enough..
