Hi just wondering if you guys can help? i am currently running minisport 4pots with 7.9 discs under a set of 10s but i am currently looking at going for a vauxhall engine conversion, i am going to be going for 13s and was wondering if it will be worth upgrading to bigger brakes as i do a lot of trackdays. Any suggestion or ideas on this area will help.

kad k4's £881 cheapr if you contact them and pay cash they will knock the vat off. 10.4 inch discs and fit under 13s and the calipers are 4 pot with dust seals :)

Joe (Mini13) used Wilwood radial mount calipers, 10.something" discs and had disc bels made up . It worked out cheaper than the KAD setup. The only awkward part was the weird thread for the hose in the caliper. I would go that way if I was upgrading brakes again.

The question is do you need better brakes? Do they fade are you having stopping problems? A good 7.9 set up should be good enough for most applications.

Have you read this months minimag? There's several pages by Keith Calver on this very subject. I read it on the train this morning. Safe to say my Metro Vented 4 pots will be going on ebay soon!

Any chance you could enlighten us?
Or is it they are overkill for the weight that a mini is?

Oh dear! Joe how do you find the Wilwood pads, do yours need to get warm to start working effectivley/

I ran the mini up the road the other day and was suprised at the amount of pressure I needed, (although I had just fitted new rear shoes and pads)

Not sure if its just because ive become more acustomed to modern massivley overservoed brakes on my Scirocco over the winter.

It basically runs through the efficencys of all the different types of brakes, with positives and negatives for all. The metro 4 pots are generally too strong for the weight of the mini. You are more likely to overwelm your grip with them. And they weigh a tonne.

I'm not quite sure,

it could be due to water hitting them from the back, I cant resist a good puddle...

I guess it could be the bells, I'll have the discs&bells off soon and dti them in the lathe,

also i'm not sure how fussy I was with the run out when I was fettling the bells, but they were ok so i dont think its that.

Andy, I'm running mintex 1144's, they seem fine unless its below about 5 degC if its raining though they are crap.

So does this mean we can solve the disc shield debate and they are there to prevent discs warping from water splashing on the inside? *hehe!*

You would probably notice any dodgy surfaces on the bell when bolting it up, so I would guess that is unlikely.

Brake calipers have always confused me slightly. More pad contact area (as with a greater number of pistons) means the frictional force acts over a greater area, but the force per unit area is therefore lower. It's something I always wanted to look into more but never have (or will, probably)

I always figured there were more pistons to stabilize the pad on the disc, so it doesn't judder.

The smaller the diameter of the piston, the further its centre is out from the centre of the disc, hence increasing the lever arm it is using against the disc rotating.

Some of the Nissan boys are running 12 pot after market jobbies, the pistons are tiny, pushed right out to the edge of the disc.

This article I will have to read very carefully as I went from the standard twin pot solid disc to the MG Metro 4 pot vented due to brake fade occuring too quickely, basicaly the car got a hell of a lot faster between the corners due to the turbo implant and the brakes could not disserpate the extra energy fast enough. Dont get me wrong here the 4 pots still suffer the same fate but they take one hell of a lot of punishment before they begin to fade.

One of the main things that swayed my decision is that they weigh nearly as much as the engine. lol. I will probably end up spending an arm and a leg on some alloy callipers.

That may be the case but they would almost certainly have a different pad (longer and thinner) shape and probably different discs too (smaller difference between inner and outer radius). If the pad shape was the same, moving the pistons out would only "tip" the pad which I can't imagine would be too sensible.

So comparing their performance to the standards doesn't only account for changes in piston area

also, remember that although 7.5" s discs may work for the track where you are slowing down but never stopping they may be inadequate on the road where they need to have the capacity to do an emergency stop without warning.

i agree nic . i dont think its possible to have brakes that are 'too strong'unless you have a wooden foot and st,vitus dance in your leg ...you just do something really really technical to get around the problem ,like for instance ,dont press the pedal so hard ?

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM
