some turbo cars run restrictor's to lower the pressure/amount of oil going in,
does any one run these on the mini??
what's ''ideal'' pressure for a turbo then?

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Mines a fresh engine but built over a long time, i have been told by various people that it could be a sticking oil ring that hasnt seated properly and to get some miles on it.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

if the turbo is unknown ......... lets say a 20 odd year old T3 you can bet the seals are goosed!

symptoms of this is ........ at idle when the engine is warm normall temp, set off it smokes on boost alot better come to idle for a few moments and it smokes

keep us informed

If it's a brand new build, have you run it in properly ? Until the rings bed in you'll find it will smoke a little.

Nibble.

I'd agree with Benross. I dont think you need worry that you've shagged your engine, it's more likely to be the turbo.

Had this with the van on the return journey of it's very first outing after MOT on the return from Beaulieu Mini Cooper Day in 2008.

The start of the journey was fine but then I gradually began to see large puffs of blue / light grey smoke at idle which cleared on boost but as soon as it got to idle it was like a cloud machine.

The turbo seals had defo gone as the old, but supposedly good T3, had given up, particulary as I had used turbo heat wrap on the turbine body which I now realise was a mistake and I would not recommend lagging the turbo itself, just the manifold.

The guys at Universal Turbo's in Salisbury gave my T3 a full recon and they fitted a 360 degree thrust bearing plus a few small tweaks whilst they had it apart.

Great service. Dropped off on a Tues (or their van does a pick up route around Chippenham / Bristol area), back by Thursday.

Once re-fitted, all smoke completely dissappeared.

I've added the link to my 'Good Garage' post.

Good luck.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
