right im selling my focus, have an agreed buyer which is my old man. im selling to let up some cash for the mini project and a cheaper runaround. the question is do i go for a 205 gti (1.6) or a rarer 205 TDI (exantia engined) with turbotechnics whoosher boosting 25psi (i have been in it and its nippy) the tdi would be a tiny bit more expensive but not sure whether its worth it.

any1 know much about 205's, iv heard they are pretty bulletproof (mates one has gone to hell and back and is still on the road) and a good daily car.

any views on the subject?

any other car recomendations?

which would you choose :)

If you want as cheap run about then neither.

The TD with 25psi is just waiting to blow up. The 1.6 GTI is fun but is not a cheap runabout.

They are old cars now, and as with any old car have plenty of niggly bits.

If you really do want a cheap runabout buy something like a 106/Saxo 1.1, Clio 1.2, Corsa 1.0 etc etc etc.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

i want cheap yes, but in regards to small engines i do alot of motorway travelling, i have tested a 1.0 polo and although it was a solid feeling car i just didnt sit on motorways the way i wanted it too. so it need some umph, im not too bothered about fuel consumption, just kepping it on the road another option i thought about was a mk2 golf...

im which way is the 1.6 non cheap, fuel?. i dont want a 1.9 gti as common sense would tell me the 1.6 is a bit cheaper to run.

sorry it sounds as if im being jippy back, im really not im just asking a question rather than questioning you, it just sounds that way.

thanks.

another factor is i want something i can feel proud of and not feel te need to modify in any way, this is where the gti would come in as i love the look of a clean standard 205 gti. are they very reliable apart from the odd niggle?

i'd steer clear of the modified deisel - it might sound good in principle but its probably going to be a bit close to the reliability edge.

I'm not sure if there will be much differance between the 1.6 and 1.9 GTis running cost wise.

what sort of money are you talking about spending as this may open up other options

its a pug or a VW

this is tempting if it dosnt go in the next few days.

I bought one whilst I was originally building mini, I may have had a bad one and spent more time fixing it than working on the mini.

1.6 GTI

I only had it on the road about 3 months, I cant remember the problems now, but there were a lot.

It sat on my drive for ages and I actually ended up owning it for 5 years....

I have found a 205 gti today in a farmers shed that I am waiting for a price on! Like tom says buy something more modern that hasn't been thrashed for the last 16- 18 years if you want to do cheap!

1.3... wondering how this would handle motorways, anyone had a GT polo? have they got enough umph to keep up with modern traffic on long motorway trips?

Betwix Harrogate and York

I bought a Subaru Justy for £450 it had 12 months ticket and 6 months tax. I did nothing but change the oil in it once. Drove around 8000 miles never missed a beat even on some long runs 2+ hours on the Mway.

After 12 months I chopped it in for £2k on the scrappage scheme, excellent.

What this proves is that I'm a jammy twat, and bought lucky. But for this sort of money you run it for 12 months, if it fails an MOT chuck it away.

There must be lots of choice for a grand, I'd personally buy Jap.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

not a big 106 or saxo fan to be honest...

im a little picky *tongue* haha

i dont need a car that has decent top speed just something that can stroll along and not be struggling on a motorway. :)

i would love a TDI but prices are higher for them than the same cars in the petrol varietys.

i did forget to mention it has to fit in a modern garage with racking at the back so any estate is out of the question in reality.
