ok, i will be getting my turbo engine next month when i have the mony for it i am planning on changing a few things to make it that little bit more reliable (oil seals/oil and water pipes etc)
2 things i am considerign changing is the diff pin (to an up rated one for 15 quid) and the clutch.
how much of a job is it to do these 2 before it goes in the car and whats the best clutch to go for, do i just go for the standard setup or what?
engine will be standard turbo maybee just a little bit more boost, see how we go ont he rollers like but it will eb staying around the 100bhp mark:)

thanks, Dan

not too big a job for the diff pin. but.......... when you replace it with an uprated one replace the small roll pin as well for a new one,
mini williams found out the hard way with this & it cost him the entire box
He prompts us all to change this, its only a few pence
the diff pin is the weakist link in the box,
second is the drop gears so its up to you!
but i would shell out and get a MINISPARES crosspin diff ?145ish for compleat peice of mind.

thanks for the reply benross, i looked at the cross pin diff, but as it is a 'relitivly' low budget install i cant streatch to 150 quid for it, (and by this i dont eman cutting corners i eman i can live without it) i will change the roll pin as well then, i guess haynes will guide through this? i would check now but its at feebles, lol
at least it makes the gear box a little bit stronger as a whole, as i know its only as strong as the weakest part.
what about the clutch, to change that do i need to take the flywheel off? it seems like a massive problem a lot of people have.

thanks, Dan

Well Dan, me personally believe, the standard vertro clutch is capable of taking 140bhp ISH in standard form if its not shagged out, if you are on a budget see how it goes??? Taking it off can be a ball ach, but do a search on clutches on this site it will put you in the ball park, I fell into this trap my self!
The standard diff pin I have seen on some motors breaks between 90 and a 120bhp it all depends on its chequered past & services??..
But go for the roll pin with out a doubt.

Go onto general chat
(Lets have a depressing moment) (Thread)

lol, i read the depressing moment about clutches thats whats making me have second thought, i dont know if i want all that stress!!
thing is when its in i dont want to have to take it out again, i can handle head gaskets and so on, but i dont want to take it out and do the clutch etc etc, i will change the roll pin and the diff pin for an uprated one becouse i know these wear and it is a 65k motor. i think i will have a go at fitting a new clutch not uprated just new so it lasts longer than say 1000 miles then i get all anoyed lol.

thanks, Dan

If you change the pin, it's ESSENTIAL that you change the planet gears as well. AND, the bronze washers that lies between the planet gears and the diff housing. If not, the new pin will be worn out after the first corner.
Have a look inside the planet gears you remove. They WILL be scored.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

vegard, sorry to be a pain in the rear, but coudl anyone do a step by step on EXACTLY what i need and what i need to do to change the planet gears as well, having not even seen inside a gearbox before its not much use till i get the engine hear.
is this all still posible without taking the engine of the box?

thanks, Dan

yep. plainit gears and diff etc are all removeable from the diff when the diff is removed from the gearbox (via the diff covers on teh back) :)

Engine and box out of car

1) lever pot joints out of side of box
2) Remove diff side covers and large diff back cover
3) Diff complete with Crown Wheel will lift out of gearbox
4) Flatten lockwashers and undo 6 bolts to remove crown wheel from diff
5) Punch out aforementioned roll pin that secures the diff pin
6) Drift out diff pin and recover planet wheels and bronze washers

7) Replace diff pin planet wheels and bronze washers. Build back into diff, secure diff pin with new roll pin.
8) Build crown wheel back onto diff. Use new locktabs
9) Replace diff into gear casing. Shim as per Haynes manual.
10) Replace diff cover and side casings. Use new locktabs.

Simple as that. Probably a couple of hours job maximum.

cool thanks tom, so parts i need to buy are:

uprated diff pin i know i can get from moss for 15quid
plannet wheels were can i get these?
bronze washers and these?
new roll pin and this?
new lock tabs and these? and how many?

thanks a lot for this help it is mucho appriciated,

how strong will the gear box be then, whats the next most likley thing to go it WILL be driven quite steady MOST of the time, but i will without a slight doupt be going down the strip a lot and the odd track day. i understand it wont make it bullet proofe but its a damn site cheeper than a whole new box and if it makes it last even 6 months longer i will be happy:)

thanks, Dan
