ok i think i understand the legalitys of towing with an a frame. so questions not associated with that.

ive got on permanent loan a ex aa solomatic 2500kg a frame, its a proper peice of kit. ive used it to tow a couple of cars without any probs.

only problem is ive just tried it on my mini and the contraption is gonna be about a inch off the floor. now i only want to tow it to the lake district and avon park so am gonna be basically traveling down the motorway so i "think" with my dampers turned to max hard setting i may be ok.
got me lad to bounce on mini and it didnt touch floor lol

im just after some honest tm opinions please?

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Shropshire.

Hi Carl, i know you say that the question is not associated with the legalitys of towing with an a frame... but how are you getting round this by using one to tow your car to Avon etc?

if i could do this it would make me very happy!

please drop me a pm if you would rather keep this post on topic.

cheers.

Does it not have chains? The RAC bloke who recovered my mini after avon said the ones with just straps had a bad habbit of snapping the straps.

How have you got it mounted? Where are the swivals? Mine sits a lot higher than that.

well these have been used by the aa for about 4 years and the straps look perfectly ok, they have some sleeves which slide over the straps to protect them where they wrap around the lower arm

there are 2 different types of ends where they attach to the arms. some have a simple L shaped piece of metal and some like mine has a claw type thiing which have a nut on the bottom.

most common ones

make up a spacer that sits under your bump stop (that you can somehow bolt on so it wont fall off) to raise the suspenion for transport to a decent height, i would NOT run the a-frame like that. if you do, atleast weld some 4mm thick "skid plates" to stop it catching.

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Mine is like the first one, looks like a much tighter and higer fit around the suspension. The hook bit on yours positions it much lower than mine, but I'm guessing that's by design. I think you should be able to get new pivots with chains and straps from the manufacturors. That's probably the best way to sort your clearance issue.

EDIT: I would advise not to buy the a frame in the first link, it's obviously been involved in an accident. Personaly I think it will have lost some of it's strength in the bump and who knows what damage will have been done to the rachets etc
