After a conversation with a friend and sort of settle a argument......does a ram air style airbox work with turbos? I personally think no. Thoughts anyone?

Surely the inlet to the turbo is a negative pressure area anyway, I can't imagine a "ram" style thing will push any more air in than is being sucked in..

If you can get ram air to work (difficult in the first place) then it could aid a turbo engine IMO. If you are putting a higher pressureinto the compressor then it will have to work less hard to produce the required output pressure.

However, I don't think that ram air is much good below about 80mph so why bother unless you really have nothing else to try.

Sort of see your point....abit more relief for the exhaust gases trying to spin the turbo.

Anything that gets cool air at as near to atmospheric pressure, or better, to the turbo inlet is going to show a gain.

BUT the gain will be the equivalent of a fraction of a psi of boost, so you have to ask if it is worth it.

Ram air systems are used extensively on sports bikes. It was reckoned to be worth 2-4 bhp at high speed (flat oot!) - enough to be a problem/consideration to the fuelling on carb equipped bikes (I'm thinking the old Kwak ZXR - it's my era). I imagine not too much of a problem on todays fuel injected bikes.
But would have to agree with the comments about its worth on an FI motor, given 2bhp gain at 170mph (while taking air from the high pressure area of the bike).
(Then again, there's plenty of high pressure areas on the mini *happy*)

^^ Do people seriously buy these? it does my head in seeing them everytime you search for anything remotely to do with turbos *angry*

With regards to ram air, a cold air feed to the filter is as far as i would take it on a TM

Its reconed that on a sports bike you get 10% more power from ram air but not untill 150mph *smiley*
I dont think many mini owners will see 150mph very often.

If ever, running some sort of ducting to get cooler air to the turbo it bound to be a bonus. But i doubt the effects will be seen.
