I have obtained a 3ph 3hp snap on compressor rated at 24cfm

it has a normal 3 pin plug, so presuming its still 240V?

i was going to t this into my airline when i use the blast cab as at the mo, my 1ph/14cfm comp cant keep up and i have to stop every 10 mins to let it build up again

So i need a converter, but know nothing about them.

There seems to be a few different sorts, some cheap and some very dear

Can someone enlighten me?
I remember a post a few years back, but all the search throws up is info about 'phase 3' cams?

Cheers

Joe

Are you sure it's 3 Phase? as you normally have one pin for each phase plus an earth.

As for voltage mains electricity is RMS so each of the three phases is 240V but when combined the total RMS voltage is 415V.

As above, a "normal" 3 pin plug implies single phase 240V (unless someone has mis-used the plug).

Look for the rating plate on the motor itself and post up what it says.

I have some doubts as to whether a 3hp motor could provide 24cfm free air.

You might just be able to do this. The Single to three phase converters exist, but are not cheap. I would suggest a rotary type for this application as the motor starting current is quite high. A static type will shit itself (maybe not right away) or a decent one would be dearer than a rotary one. You will need (at least) a 15 Amp single phase outlet to run it from.

I get it nearer 10A, which would be 30+ amps on start up. Should be ok with the correct protection. It is pushing it a bit on a standard 13a socket though.

ill check it today and take a few pictures, i picked up a load of compressors, and might be confusing details between them

i have one 3ph that has a 600L tank, cant shift that though as need an engine crane to get it in/out of the transit lol

some compressor require a 16amp supply.
easy way to tell 3 phase machine to single is the capasitors. A single phase motor will have 1 or two for torque on start up. Another would be to look at the pressure switch on the tank.
It is possible to replace the motor with a single phase one, asssuming its belt drive.
I can sort you out with a pressure switch IF it needs changining but alot will do single and 3 phase.
Not sure who makes the Snap-on pump units but its more than likly a ABAC pump rebranded. Could even be a stenio.

Personly i would avoid a vane machine for personal use as the spares are expencive compared to a piston machine.
Screw machines are the daddy but mega money.
