Does anybody have a home brew method of getting the inside of a gearbox clean and gleaming? I've got an empty case I want to clean up before I rebuild the box and I am struggling to find anywhere local to get it cleaned.

Shove it in the dishwasher if it will fit, sure someones had pictures up of stuff they've popped in there before and it came up reasonably well.

Cheers Ross.

Germini, black forrest

Yes an no. The washing dye will corrode the case, mine got dark grey and dull. But proper clean :) I'm not puttin alloy in a dishwasher again. :/

My prefered method is still to clean it with a brush & diesel and rinse it out with lots of brake cleaner. Takes a little time but works well. The less stinky method is water, soap and all sorts of brushes and wire wool.

de-greaser and a pressure washer worked for me. I did it at a petrol station with their jet wash, but most won't let you do it now

Thanks guys. I have already given it a good go with a jet wash, and that got the worst of it off. I'll give elbow grease a go.

Try brillo pads and another blast out. I guess anything that is good at degreasing and slightly abrasive would work.

See if you can find someone to soda-blast it. It will take all the gunk, grease, road grime and any paint off, but will not in anyway harm the casting. When asking around be sure to enquire that they do it dry. Some try to do it wet, to keep the dust down but is way less effective so will cost you more to get a result.
