Hi, im fairly new to mins and to turbos, so before i start on a big project i thought i would double check you guys agree with it first! Im building this to be a fast road daily driven vehicle with occasional track use.

Basically i have a 998 engine in my mini at the moment, and i want more power. So, im looking at getting a 1275 and convert to the following spec;

Bored to 1293
Omega +0.020 10cc dish cast pistons
Full gasket and shell rebuild
Garret T2 turbo
Metro carb and manifold
Some form of Intercooler from ebay
Custom made downpipe
SPI tank and pump with fuel pressure regulator
4 bolt center strap

Now im stuck, what do i need head wise, and what about rockers? I like the look of those alloy tip ones from minisport and minispeed and the like, but do i go for 1.5's or just standard lifts?

Im guessing my Rods and crank will be ok for this as i hear people running 200 horsises on standard rods and cranks with no problems.

Im looking to achive 140 + break, maybe upto 170 or 80 in the future. Is this possible with runnng 15 to 20psi with a T2?

What else would i need to modify on the engine to take 180 break with 20psi of boost?

Do i need a blow off valve aswell? I assume this just prolongs the life of the turbo?

Anything i have missed? I have been searching for hours on end now but i seam to just give my self more questions!

Thanks for all the help
Rich

The 4 bolt strap is over kill, most people just use a 2 bolt one and save themselves some expensive machine shop work.

I don't think the SPi pump will flow enough fuel for a turboed mini, but you could just replace the pump inside the tank.

As for the head, you need to work out a safe compression ratio and spec your head and pistons to achieve this. Talk to Benross and Turbo Phil about head work. They both produce top modified cylinder heads.

You also need to think about a cam. The avonbar phase 2 cam seems to produce good power.

This is where i get stuck :) I have no idea how i need to calculate the compression ratio or what i needs to be, all i understand is it needs to be lower for a turbo.

I was looking at this build from Bud on Theminiforum which sounds about perfect for me, the only problem i can see is the Morspeed ST4 head which is alot of money! Would it be possible to get one done by Turbo Phill or benross cheaper or is this the sort of price im looking at? I have already been told that the omega pistons are the pistons il need, and that £300 is the price i have to pay for pistons, yet i have now found that BUDs engine is running the £120 cheaper morspeed turbo pistons and has had no problems.

Thanks
Rich

you've pretty much got everything covered,

rocker wise most people recomend 1.3's

turbo wise you may want to consider a gt17 if you want to get up around 180hp

the other things you will want to consider are,

ignition (megajolt?)
diff
clutch
gears

you'd have to discuss pricing with Benross or Phil as they head would be done to your needs.

The general consensus is to avoid Morspeed. Some members have taken him to small claims court over unfinished/undelivered work.

The omegas are a well proven piston. I will be putting some in my engine when I get that far.

Ah, good job i asked about Morspeed then!

Yep, as for gearbox ect. that was my next question, i was thinking rebuilding with straigh cut gears? As for the clutch, pretty much as the spec link above says, a grey diaphram with an Ap Fast Road plte from minisport.

As for ignition, i was going to go with Megajolt then get the whole assembly rolling roaded to try and find as much horse as i can!

you don't have to buy the pistons from morspeed, just get em from minispares and i'm sure phil/benross could machine them out while doing a head for you.

*edit*

i wish i could remember how i codged that site together, it's so far out of date now.

Ahh, Hi Nick, i diddnt realise you were on here aswell, Yer, i noticed you now run a different setup developing 200 brake or similar, but your old setup listed on there sounds about perfect for me!

it was a nice budget setup, great as a daily drive on 10psi then up to 15psi for some fun.

That sounds ideal.

What would be preventing you from increasing the pressure up to 20psi and getting more??

Do you have any more info on the setup??

And finally what sort of performance were you getting from it?? 0-60 and top speed??

Thanks for the help

the turbo was stopping me going to 20psi, it was only a small t25 and ran out of puff @ 15psi.

still running the same enine now but with a gt20 @ 20psi

performace wise i never got it down the strip on the t25 but it would pull to the 6.5k limiter on a 3.1 fd

Ahh, well to be honest I think 170ish brake should be plenty for me. As I said its just a fast road car, nothing racey so it should be perfect!

How did it cruze at motorway speeds??
