Hi

As the title really - Do you need a speedo/fuel gauge for a MOT?

I am getting the mini rolling roaded and MOT'd and wanted to find out if i need to sort the speedo before its goes in.

I have a speedo where the working one will be, so indicators lights, full beam etc will all be in place. The speedo just wont work.

Cheers

Jon

Whilst a speedo isn't an explicit MoT requirement you are legally required to have some means of determining the speed of your vehicle and the MoT tester may not be happy passing a car that isn't road legal.

That said the law is very vague as to the accuracy of speedo, also the MoT tester is not required to drive the car at any stage of an MoT and I don't think they're allowed to take it for a test ride (although I might be wrong) so it is questionable how they can prove it works correctly.

Fuel gauge doesn't matter.

Its weird really...

Here in NI not only must you have a working speedo...but it must have both mph and kph available.

Lots of the import guys get caught out as they just convert their kph speedo's to mph with convertors.

There have been literally hundreds of MOT failures for that alone.

Although the addition of a Sat Nav for speed display is an interesting one...although I'm sure you would have to fight hard to get it passed that way !

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

the law and mot are 2 very different things for some strange reason, which is mainly to do with money. there are lots of things which are illegal but the mot man cant fail them.

the tester can test drive the car if they think they need to on an mot

if you leave the milage blank it just prints "milage not displayed" on the mot, so dont worry about your speedo

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
