hi guys
i am thinking of building up a turbo engine over the next few years, aiming to utilise my Dad's knowledge and tools (hopefully!)
I've had a quick read and as far as I can work out, these are the main things that I need:
1.Good condition (preferably 1275) engine and box
2.Manifold set (is the Mirage motorsport ?350 a good way to go? i dont mind spending a little bit extra for proven parts and less hassle!)
3.Piston and ring sets, what about uprated (lightened/strengthened) con rods too???
4.Mpi fuel tank
5.Oh yeah, the actual turbo! Bearing in mind its going to be a fast road engine, so T2 prob from a renault5 turbo?
6.HIF44 1.75" carb
7. Cylinder head work and bore out cylinders

How about cams, crankshafts etc, will these need changing?

I know theres a lot of questions here, but if I've missed any important things out please let me know. I haven't got a huge budget, but dont want to skimp on performance either.
It's going to be fast road so doesnt need to be mad, I just need to know roughly how much its going to cost?

Thanks in advance
Steve

dont think you can put a price on the lot! iam doing mine and i thought you could work a rough guide but everything works on exchange or availability so depends on different parts wnd wether people are selling at sensible prices or wanting to increase prices to stupid(parts getting rarer as people hoard stuff)!

You can't really price that with any meaning, could guess but it just depends how you get on hunting for things and if you get any lucky breaks.

For instance I bought a complete metro turbo doner car for ?80 from a scrappers 4 years ago but nowadays you will be lucky to find one.

My recommendation would be to buy a job lot off ebay or similar to get it in and working, and then improve it either as it breaks or as you get more cash.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Well ive been costing mine up, no labour except for machining and for the spec i want (purely a running engine/box and turbo etc) im upto ?4k. thats not including anything bodywise/suspension/brakes/interior/wheels etc etc.

Granted i do want a high spec so its all worth while.

lsd, ignition, straight cut bits and bobs, new turbo, manifolds... the list goes on and on and on...
May as well job the job properly! lol!
Once you start adding bits up it soon climbs!

By straight cut bits and bobs, i presume you mean the gbox. Do you have to have straight cut gears, I hear the standard box can be a bit of a weak link? Plus i don't know much about turbocharging, so would I be best off buying a turbo lump to start off with and up-rate that, or can I get a standard NA engine and turbo that?
Thanks for all the input guys

the gearbox is actually pretty strong i hear, if its been rebuilt PROPERLY with all new bearings and built to the right tolerances it should take quite a lot of power.
i think the weak link is the drop gears but even they are pretty resilient if set within the manufacturers tolerances.

How about if i was to buy a metty turbo as a donor car, change the standard turbo to one from a Renault 5 Turbo, along with a manifold to suit. Surely then all I'd need to do is change the cam, probably get some work done to the cylinder head, and strengthen the gears?
Plus, what do you guys think about intercoolers, all the pics you see of turbo minis always seem to have intercoolers. Would I need one if i was to carry out the above plan?
