as all of the turbo head makers come on here ,.... of what i`ve seen/done/tried all are very similar , most of the quick cars use a modded head and a lot of other things to get the power.

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

I had Brian Slark do a head for me years ago and it was superb the best attention to detail i've seen from the mini suppliers i've delt with sofar. I went with the 32mm exhaust and 36mm inlet head.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

I wouldnt recomend the company my head is from.....

The first head blew into the waterjacked and damaged my engine through water contamination in the oil and destroyed piston rings.

The replacement head they gave me have covered about 500miles - due to my gearbox having problems the engine was stripped - I poped my valves out and i round 2 of the exhaust valves were litterally rattleing around in their guides -- Very Very poor workmanship in the head.

Search through some of my posts from 6 months ago - but im not really ment to be naming names......

Pay your money and take your choice... turbo heads are nothing like as critical as a nat-asp head for outright power compared to all the other things that need to be matched - cam timing, turbo matching, ignition, rocker ratio, etc...

My head is home made, and probably the worst modified head on this board, but all the other ingredients of the engine work well (better?) than others as a whole...
What I'm basically saying is I don't consider the head to be where all the money should be spent. Get something with the chamber size you want, slightly modified ports (opened out around the guide and short-side radius, but basically a stock (A+ 12G940), or maybe ever so slightly larger port size in the 'runners') and whatever valves you desire; then invest in getting a decent ignition system, exhaust, rockers, cam, etc...

Interestingly, most of the PROVEN more powerfull / quickest turbo minis out there run 35.7 (MG Metro) inlets and 29mm exhausts.
Also, make sure you get uprated (hi-lift) valve springs fitted, not OE ones. These bind up when used with a mild cam and 1.5 rockers...

just to add... If I was building a miglia engine, I'd expect to spend a lot on a head, as every last cfm vs lift is critical.
Turbo's don't have this problem.

Dave, is a 12g940 head better than the standard head from the metty turbo engine? as i have one of these on the cooper S engine i am trying to shift!

The Metty head is a 12G940 as well, but the castings are slightly different. The best head form stock, is the MG Metro head. It's got a bit bigger inlets and valve throats. But, if modifying a boggo Metty head, there's absolutely no difference apart from that you don't have to remove so much metal on the MG ones.

Metro or S, doesn't matter. For us mortal people, we would never know the difference, and we don't need to know either.

I'd hazard to say that ALL big bore 1275 heads can be treated as equal before modification.

good advice dave cheers,
the thing that i dont get though is the price..
its not as if they are making the head for you, its already there they just mod it and it costs hundreds of pounds ! why the hell are they so exspensive, i dont meen to sound offensive to the head modders on here, so i'll be happy to be put straight by stewart ect.

The prices are mainly just down to the sheer hours it takes to do the modification, I once modified a 12G202 1098 mini head by opening up the throats a bit, and reshaping the chambers, it took me bloody ages, I was a skint student at the time, but after doing that would have gladly paid for a pro modified head!

when i do turbo heads , it takes at least 2 weeks , working nights and weekends say maybe 40 hours grinding /measuring and peeing about even at ?5 an hour(lol) thats ?200 , plus new valves /guides and fitting ,decking etc for there`s your cost

I agree. It takes AGES to do a head properly. Then include the mounting of valve guides, grindig the valve seats, grindig valves ( if not new), and skimming.

Skimming alone is ?40 at MED.
